On our GS430 (which I assume is pretty much the same) we have to first enter in the region. So if the truck you drove was bought from an auction across the country, or just in a different region, then it has its setting set for that area, not yours. In this case, it would not find the address. Then, you enter in the city, address number, then it will let you type in the street name. By this point, it will pull up all possible streets...for example pine street, pine street west, pine ave, ect...
Lastly, if the street was constructed after the nav. dvd was, then it will not pull anything up. In this instance you need to order an update for the nav. unit.

LOTS of home addresses entered on the Toyota Nav will return with nothing. Its normal.

That is very lame. All GPSs will get you at least close. The funny thing is the address 414 Pleasant St, Watertown MA was the address of the car dealership.
My daily GPS is a Garmin Streetpilot, I am quite sure it has no idea if there is a legitimate house/building at an address, it just routes you there.

Exactly, the Toyota NAV needs a serious software re-design. Garmin is smart enough to at least get you to the 400 block if it doesnt have the right address, the Toyota one just laughs at you.

Actually the Toyota/Lexus units are pretty good. I have never had a problem not finding an address. All that is important is to keep the GPS DVD updated if you dont have the HDD. I have had three Toyota/Lexus vehicles with factory nav. so I am saying this from my personal experience.
Can you please explain the comment about the HDD? I assume this 2008 has the 2008 data.
1) How much does Toyota charge to get the updates, do you just buy a dvd at the dealer and load it into some storage device inside the factory Nav unit?
2) How many waypoints will the Nav unit hold? I have over 100 waypoints in my Garmin (I am a HS umpire and have all the schools programmed, mostly from just "marking" them the first time I went there to work) I am sure it's stupid to ask if there's a way to transfer them into the 4R Nav unit.

I've found the only way it works is to enter in the city first then the street or address...why this makes a difference I have no idea. I have not been as pleased with the ease of use with the Fujitsu unit...if you can get it to find an address it does give great directions though.

HDD means Hard Disk Drive. Many brand new models are going this route instead of the dvd based navigation units. The 4Runner you drove has the dvd based unit. Behind the side plastic wall in the cargo area should be the navigation's dvd drive. You can hit eject there, and the nav. disk will eject. Even though the one you drove was a 2008, the mapping was from 2007. This is the way all Toyota dvd nav. units are. The actual disk year is a year behind the car year because a new disk has not been made for the next year yet. I dont know how many points the Toyota units hold. As I only keep our home as one, and no others. I would assume you cannot simply transfer data from y our Garmin unit over to a factory Toyota one as I see no jack to transfer data.

Yep, every factory Toyota/Lexus unit has all of the dealerships programmed in. Works quite nicely if you are in an area that you don't know the address to the local dealer.

If you can store waypoints, means there must be some non-volatile memory. I think this unit loads the DVD right behind the screen, I looked and there were 2 slots, 1 I think for the map dvd, another for music cds.
Guess I have a lot of playing with it ahead of me. Too used to the nice Garmin. Maybe I'll mount that one also.

The land cruisers is under the passenger seat and 6disc changer is in the arm rest.

Sorry it took a while for me to try this on mine. It did find the address of "414 Pleasant St, Watertown, MA" on my nav.
I had to set the search area on mine to "US8". Then I input the address number, street, followed by the town or city. Normally, I don't need to put in the town or city name, it'll just present a bunch of cities to pick from. I guess under that particular search area, there are a lot of towns or cities with "Pleasant St."
The results from my nav returned coordinates of N42*21'59" and W74*12'12".
My disc version is 05.1
On the note of the Garmins, I have the Nuvi 660 and 885, and I still prefer the functionality and input of the Toyota nav over Garmin. What I hate about the Garmin is I have to start with the state or city first. 95% or more of the time with that Toyota nav, I don't need to do that (possibly because cities out here don't use the same street name as another). I start with the house number and street and it will give me the location. If it happens to be a common street name, it'll list a bunch of cities and I just select that. So it's just wasting more of my time when I need to put in a destination.
The new map discs typically come out around October and cost about $300. I'll buy a portable before I buy a disc.
