That “dunk” noise

I had a similar noise in a 2008 trd tacoma and it ended up being the slip yoke. To be honest I haven't looked at the design of my 4runner but assuming it uses a similar designed slip yoke, try greasing the splines

Winner ^^^^! I only torqued the rear LCA nuts, as I’ll do the fronts on the next oil change. Passenger side rear nut needed several strokes with the torque wrench before clicking at 120. Did did quick tests in driveway and the “dunk” noise is gone. I will do more thorough testing on the road, but the driveway was more than enough to generate the noise prior to torquing. Also lubed the shafts and the slip yokes.

Ruled out sway bar bushings with a road test and the bushings atop the front shocks were squished tight. Nice to be back in sunny SoCal so I can do this work.

Thanks for sharing; throwing a problem out there on the www and resolving it is fun to hear that it's fixed; I'll have to check my lower control arm nuts (LCA) & grease yoke when its sunny and warm next summer. Just added it to my todo 4r maintenance list.

You're welcome. I like troubleshooting and this one was "nagging me". It's my wife's 4Runner, so I don't get to drive it much. The noise did not bother her and she'd just drive through it. She's retired and drives back and forth from SoCal to our place in Montana every month. I swear she just comes home for me to do maintenance on her truck.:sobbing:
