That PCV Valve Grommet! What a motherf%$&er!

Whoo! Just replaced my PCV valve and grommet in my 4runner and my goodness. That grommet was a *****! So brittle after all these years! I was so afraid to drop it into the valve cover. I managed to drop 2 little rubber chunks down there but i got them out in the end with tweezers! :D
How has the experience been for you guys?

What would have happened if i didnt get those rubber chunks out? Would the cams just have demolished them?

Yeah, I had the same experience. I'm so glad that there is a baffle under it. I was fishing little pieces out for quite a while. It was definitely a lesson learned, I'll be sure to change that damn grommet before it has a chance to get so brittle again.
 
On my 2cnd gen I had it done at the dealer when they were replacing my relay rod under warranty.

They only charged about $55 and that included the valve.
I thought that was a bargain.

That's the only time I've gone to a dealer, it worked out well.
 
Same thing happened to me. I took out what I could with tweezers and put a shop vac on the hole to get anything I might have missed.

Ummm maybe? It's oily though, I don't think the glue will stick. I used needle nose pliers, tweezers, and a small flat head to pry it, cut it, and pull it!

Mother lover indeed. My new valve and grommet's been sitting on my bench for the past 2 months because I couldn't remove the old POS even after soaking it with deep creep... Will do it when I get the valve cover done in a couple of months and replace it periodically thereafter.
 
Using an exacting blade, cut down and thru one side of the grommet. Then using needle nose pliers, it is easy to work it in and loose. Almost got it out in one complete piece.
 
Yeah, it's definitely a *****. I also ended up dropping a few pieces of the grommet in the hole. A few curse words and a pair of tweezers solved the problem. I wouldn't recommend super glue.

Welcome to the club.

I think fishing PCV grommet chunks out is a right of passage that no self-respecting 4Runner owner should shy away from.

It's rumored that afterwards you gain 4.87 additional HP, your voice lowers by two octaves and you gain an extra couple inches.

But I can't verify that last bit since I can't count past 8...

That's exactly what I did, but watch that lip on the top as it tends to tear very easily!

I replaced mine when replacing my Fuel Pressure Regulator.
I already had to remove the valve covers because they slightly cover the intake manifold, and I had managed to break one of the fuel injectors and it fell into the valves :roadkill:

I had even hosed the PCV and the gromet down with WD-40 several times in the days leading up to it and it still shattered. I just shook the valve cover upside down to get it out.
 
Just did that today. Bit of a challenge as when I was rocking it back and forth to try to get it out, the elbow snapped. Switched to a pair of channel locks and after about 15 minutes of back an forth it popped out. The grommet lifted out a bit and I thought I was home free on that, but it crumbled as I lifted it out. It split so I was able to get some needle nose behind it and it came out after a few minutes of back and forth. New pieces slipped right in with a little oil from the dipstick rubbed on.

I have a sludge issue (tho running great) and had a whining sound at cold start until she warmed up. That sound now is oddly gone. See if that comes back.

Thanx for all the advice on this. Would have never know to replace this as it was mentioned a few times in my "Sludge call" thread. Now just a slow slow regime to try to clear out some of the sludge.
 
Supposedly there is a baffle in there that prevents the broken parts from getting into the motor. I still pulled what I could out w/ a shop vac and long nose pliers.
 
Yeah mine broke into pieces also. Had to use a needle nose with bubble gum on the end to get the little pieces out. Sucked!
