The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

I have a 2001 Limited 4x4. I am seriously considering a Supercharger for it.
Do I need a fresh motor, Mine has 150,000 miles. Do I need to rebuild the transmission or the rear end?

I have been looking at the Magnuson supercharger.

Anyone notice a "rattling" of sorts when cold? I haven't exactly been kind to my supercharger lately, but I've started to notice a bit of a rattle noise when I first start up and under very light acceleration. Once it's warm and the idle drops it goes back to normal.

I'm GUESSING it's the supercharger but I don't know for sure. Definitely engine related though. I don't have a valve knock, I know what that sounds like and it's much more rhythmic. This is more of a metal on metal rattling.

Mine has had that light rattle since I installed it...new. I read somewhere on this thread that it's normal.

I don't, but I've got a bunch laying around the garage if you need me to measure them. I'd guess they are M8 x 1.25 but I don't know for sure and don't know the length.

Damn wtf, I have the 2.2 and 7th injector at a 200' elevation and can't seem to make it past 5psi... :redbrick:

Check your vacuum actuator (round black thing on the back driver side of the SC). If you have a leak or if it is broken your S/C will limit or eliminate boost.

Your truck is barely broken in. Install it and enjoy. There are many guys on here with well over 200k miles on their trucks, all supercharged and they have no issues.

Here is what Gadget from URD told me:
"Engine off, note the position of the valve. Start the engine, the valve should now be all the way in the other position. If does not work that way, figure out why."

This does not account for small pin hole leaks in the vacuum line leading to the actuator though. That one just pull the piece off, fold one end back to make a seal then stick a compressor on it and listen for leaks, or since its cheap just replace it.

Magnuson is the same manufacturer as the TRD one that was discontinued. It's how a 4Runner should have been, in my opinion. You don't need to change anything. Except for maybe the oil.

Thanks for the info. That is funny. When I purchased in March, I took it in for tires, brakes, water pump, timing belt, Etc. I asked if it needed a valve job or rebuild. The mechanic said the same thing, its just broken in!

Hey guys I am hoping I can get some insight from everyone, I recently found a gen 1 SC in the junkyard on a wrecked 4runner. I never really did any research on the SC for the 3.4 because never planned on one. But since it fell into my lap I figured I have to install this thing. I bought it for 120$ for the charger/tensioner I know deal of the century!

I am working on getting everything together. Below is the list of stuff I have or think I need. Please let me know what else I need.

What I have:
SC
new belt
all mounting bolts

What I Need
Stant 14077 T-stat
IK22 plugs
TRD Gasket ( anyone have a lead on where to buy one cheaper then $30?)
IAC Check valve
Dipstick relocation bracket (any clue where to get one?)

I am going to be doing an oil change when I install it, should I be looking at a different weight oil?

Wow, just wow. Anyway...

Cheapest "O" shaped gasket is take the one you have, cut it into a circle with a razor blade and re-install! Free! Of course, if it's really old it might leak on you.

Don't bother with changing the oil weight. The supercharger will add a little heat but the cooler thermostat takes care of that. Keep running what you have, just check it a bit more often since the boost pressure tends to force more fuel vapors and other stuff in the crank case, my oil browns up pretty quick but is still good for a while. You might look into running synthetic or oils with less wear qualities since you won't be able to keep your foot off the skinny pedal!

For the dipstick relocation bracket... any chance you can get back to that engine? Other than buying a kit of all accessories from Magnuson for $150+, I don't know of anywhere to source that bracket.

For the gasket I might buy a new one and then cut that one. Mine is pretty old.

Good to know about the oil, I already run synthetic oil so ill keep doing what im doing.

I can try to get back into that car but it had some front end damage, not enough to move the motor but might be hard to get in there. I was hoping someone had a template or it was something simple and I could fab one.
