The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

For the gasket I might buy a new one and then cut that one. Mine is pretty old.

Good to know about the oil, I already run synthetic oil so ill keep doing what im doing.

I can try to get back into that car but it had some front end damage, not enough to move the motor but might be hard to get in there. I was hoping someone had a template or it was something simple and I could fab one.

I read some of your thread. I am hoping I am covering all my bases.

My thread is an enthusiast's take on an engine that's basically bulletproof. Some things I have done I got right, others I got wrong so take what I've done with a grain of salt. It's basically just my thoughts & conclusions puked into one big thread lol.

There's a lack of feedback on a lot of these aftermarket parts so hoping my thread can help others make informed decisions.

I read through your entire thread. I got a lot of info from it. I dont think I will be going as far as you did. I think just putting the SC on should be enough for me. I dont plan on going too fast, I have motorcycles for that. Now I just need to build the runner up in other areas now.

Has anyone bought one of these new (not rebuilt or used) recently (like in the last 6 mo) and what did you pay? Where did you buy it from?

Thanks

Brian, I just bought mine a month ago from URD.

I bought the supercharger and the 7th injector as a kit for roughly $3460 shipped. You can buy the supercharger only from URD with the code MEMBER I think for 5% off.

I have been having some difficulty with the URD tuning for the 7th injector, but I think I have it figured out and it was something already on the truck that wasn't playing well with the URD piggyback computer.

The supercharger install was simple, maybe 4 hours total. The URD computer and 7th install was significantly more nerve racking as it involves cutting and soldering wires going into the trucks ECU.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend the SC and allegedly the 7th injector and timing control makes it better for daily driving. It definitely adds up quick though. SC, 7th, gauges, and a gauge pod finally ended up being around $3800!!! Plus getting a 2.2" pulley is about $100 too...

I'd also consider a 1UZ swap if your 4runner is a spare vehicle and can be down for a little while.

I may be late to the party with this, but it seemed like a lot of the info I found while looking up superchargers said belts were hard to find. Continental makes a "gatorback" belt, formerly Goodyear belts. I have used these belts for a while and they are really good. No squealing and they keep the pulleys clean because the cuts actually help sweep them out and keep debris out of the pulleys. Could be a good belt for people to try especially if you are having belt slip.

They make one specifically for this supercharger.

Part no. K4040620

I found them on ebay for about 14 bucks, it's certainly a lot cheaper than 30+ like I spent on my spare...

How long did it take to install the URD 7th injector? I can't solder metal at all... fail miserably every attempt.

P.S. your boost port barb looks like it's not threaded in all the way, it is almost flush on my supercharger. Just a heads up if it seems like you've got a leak somewhere. Could also be that the newer ones (non-TRD) fit differently.

I'd say it took about 4-5 hours. I took my time, especially the soldering. I feel like I honestly could have just used quality crimp connectors. Fuel pump was easy, as I've dropped the tank before, it didn't even take an hour. For the gas tank, you need some long reach needle nose and 90 degree long reach needle nose. Otherwise you'll be under there all day.

To be honest, I'm not really sold on the 7th injector, it seems like part throttle performance has suffered a bit vs just the supercharger, but top end is improved. It's pretty well-tuned and I still feel like before the calibrator was installed it ran better.

Noted, I'll take a look at that. It was installed before it arrived and I didn't think to double check it. I'm getting 6-6.5 psi.

Before you toss it on make sure there isn't too much play in the rotor-pack that would indicate a bad needle bearing or coupler. Last thing you want is the rotors to touch when spinning at speed and send metal into your motor.

Lots of affordable rebuild kits out there or I really enjoyed Embree Machine for rebuild help. Suggested Supercharger Rebuilder with Services from Embree Specialty Machine at the The High Speed Lab, Eaton Superchargers, MINI Cooper S R53, TRD Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Neuspeed, TVS, lingenfelter, Chevy Corvette, Chevrolet Camaro, GM,

Just my 2 cents - all of these options add $$$. I know I threw mine on right away and it was a ebay find.

I was nervous about the condition as well. I had the good local speed shop check it out because I dont know much about SC's in general. They said everything looks good and I also had them replace the oil in the cone. The downside is I picked up the charger and had to put it right into a box and pack it away because I am moving across country from CA to Tenn. So the project is on hold for a bit until I can get settled into the new location.

Hey guys I am hoping I can get some insight from everyone, I recently found a gen 1 SC in the junkyard on a wrecked 4runner. I never really did any research on the SC for the 3.4 because never planned on one. But since it fell into my lap I figured I have to install this thing. I bought it for 120$ for the charger/tensioner I know deal of the century!

I am working on getting everything together. Below is the list of stuff I have or think I need. Please let me know what else I need.

What I have:
SC
new belt
all mounting bolts

What I Need
Stant 14077 T-stat
IK22 plugs
TRD Gasket ( anyone have a lead on where to buy one cheaper then $30?)
IAC Check valve
Dipstick relocation bracket (any clue where to get one?)

I am going to be doing an oil change when I install it, should I be looking at a different weight oil?

Edit: Here is a pic of the SC when I got it home
BeLlfFr.jpg
Typically the bypass elbow orings are totally shot and leaking due to lack of maintenance on the Grey supercharger and leak boost.

Starting to get a lot of bearing noise from my gen 1 supercharger, anyone know if a quick oil change may make quite down? Or if anyone possibly knows someone in metro Atlanta that rebuilds them that would be awesome too. it's got about 150k on the blower.

Only if it were almost out of oil. The noise is play in the bearings or coupler causing the rotors to rattle/contact.

As a quick heads up, regardless of what URD says you CAN in fact by just the gold colored throttle bracket for our blowers.

In general my experience with URD has been horrible, laziest sales/service people I have ever met.

I had my unit rebuilt last year. There's only a few shops left that work on these units. Embree's, & John Bond being 2 of them.

Hi Guys,

I have about 223,000 on my original motor, trans, rear end, etc.
Is the milage too high to install a SC? I am seriously considering a Magnuson SC.
Thanks in advance,

Bryan

Nope, boost away!

As a comparison, mine just rolled over 219,000 miles. ALL of those miles have been supercharged. You'll find others with very similar stories.

You can do a compression check if you want to at a shop beforehand just to see if there's any red flags but these engines are strong so it's not likely.

Alight guys. Junkyard blower memorial weekend install is a go!!!!

I have a few small parts I still need to pickup and a few last minute questions.

Parts I need to get.
-Spacer and longer bolt for driver side mount (looks like I can get it all from lowes)

-Bolt for the dipstick relocation.

-Some vacuum line because I stupidly just cut the old ones when I was taking it off.

-T fitting for the vacuum line. But I cant find the size specs on any of the install DIYs. Can someone chime in on this? In the Timmy tool man install it wasnt needed but that truck was an 01 I have a 98.

-Does anyone know how long this should take with out any major speed bumps? I am giving myself 3 days but I am hoping it wont take that long. And I have another vehicle to make parts runs if needed. I have watched the Timmy install video like 3 times over and will have it going as I do mine in the garage.

Any tips/tricks/advice is appreciated.
