Hi all- been lurking for quite a while, so I thought I would sign up to support the forum.
I own a 2000 4Runner SR5 I believe, with the 5mt and the rear locking diff- with 147k on the clock. A very busy friend had owned it, and replaced it with a new diesel heavy duty pickup for towing so rather larger trailers. As he owns a business and has a kid, he is super busy so the truck just sat. He didn't want to sell it as it needed some work to pass inspection and he didn't want to deal with the Craiglist crazies. He first offered it to me at $900, which was a bit rich for an impulse purchase. A few months later, he lost the parking sport for it by his business and needed it gone. I told him $500, as is where is- whatever's broken is on me.
He said yes, and i owned a $500 4runner. It need a jump to start, but surprisingly did not drive that bad for something that sat for 4 months. Its smelled like wet dog (Saint Bernard), was beat on the outside and needed to pass the State Inspection. Fortunately, a really good Indy garage had taken care of it the last couple of years, and they were right by my house.
So round one was just get it to be safe and pass inspection. It was going to be used to haul my mtn bikes, gas cans and random stuff. It needed front brakes job badly, a new battery and a new rear tail light. She also got a oil change as well. The clutch was noted as being on its last legs (something the seller had warned me about). Also, before I could get the work done I had to fend off my first unsolicted purchase offer.
But still, I now had a running, driving and inspected 4runner and was into the car for less than a grand.
