the aftermath...

and after a long day wheeling i take the truck out today and all of a sudden my power steering goes out, the engine temperature skyrockets, the battery light comes on and it becomes nearly impossible to turn the wheels without speed and strenth, so i drive right down the street and pull into the toyota dealer and take a look and i have muddy radiator fluid dripping on the ground and a serpemtine belted shredded to bits and hanging all over the place!!!

im glad this happenned today and not yesterday and im glad i had that yellow top optima battery keeping me alive til i reached the dealer

the service guy was atonished when he first looked at the truck and how modded and muddy it was and second when he found out i had 120k on that belt!!

so i got a lift home and my truck will be all done tomorrow

It would have been wise to stop right there and fix it. A lot of damage can be done by overheating a engine. Carry a spare belt and know how to change it. When I replace the belt I save the old one as a spare.

120k on a serpentine belt without replacement??? I thought those needed to be replaced in 60k or 80k intervals. Why did you not have it replaced sooner?

I hope that everything turns out OK and there is no permanent damage. Keep us posted....

i actually thought i had it replaced at the 80k but i guess it wasnt included in that service i dont know it was a long time ago, i got a call today and it looks as if the pulleys caused the belt failure, 2 of the 3 pulleys seized and caused the belt to fail, so the truck is staying another night to get the new parts needed tomorrow and it should be all done mid afternoon, they are doing the labor free on the pulleys im just paying for parts

whoa whoa whoa...there is a belt that needs to be replaced at 60-80k? I haven't replaced anything on the truck and I have almost 100k...I must be missing something.

If you have a V6 then there's one belt to worry about, the fan (accessory) belt. If you have a V8 then there's two, a fan belt and a timing belt. The V8 specifies 90k for the timing belt. There's no mileage given for the fan belt. The schedule just says "inspect". Most of the time 80-120k is about it for the type of belt the 4Runner uses.

Oh and josh, sorry to hear that about your truck...I think we need to stay out of the mud next time!

My truck is still bleeding and I keep finding more mud. My engine bay is a mess!

And my truck definitely felt strange for atleast 2 days afterwards.

Question For The _Josh !!!

I see you are using the Rocky Road Super Sliders.....

How Do they Mount up ??? Are the Bolt on or Weld on ???

Thank you in advance for your Time

60K interval for pre 98s timing belt

I've been told that on my v6 '97 I have to change the timing belt ever 60-80k

60K is the stated interval for the early 3.4s

90K is the stated interval for 98s and up for 3rd gens

4th gens 2003-2008(?) I don't pretend to know about
