The Cargo Management Thread

I spent a good amount of time before and after my purchase on this forum, so thank you all for the wealth of knowledge and entertainment up front!

With a dog kennel, cooler, camping supplies, and every day items that come and go in the back of the 4Runner, one of the realizations that I discovered early on was that the cargo management from the factory is lacking in many ways. Namely in the ability to tie individual items down safely and independently. I have some ideas floating around in my head, and have visited threads like [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] 's and his cargo conversion ( http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/92013-antmans-thread-14.html#post876313 ). Thanks for the write up on that one, [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION].

While I have my own list and needs, my question is simple. What do YOU think is needed most in the back of our rigs? Tie downs? Moveable tie downs? Having the back be FLAT with the second row seats when folded down (really Toyota)? Being able to add/remove modular pieces with ease? Reverting to stock?

I can't help but wonder, with the array of people on here with different jobs and hobbies, what you all want or have done to accomplish your needs! :snacker:

I did an Antman mod. Can add all the tie downs you want, but how many is that? I have 4 and that's always been enough for me.

I have a 65qt Pelican Ice chest. An inflatable kayak. Big tent, and several backpacks that I have to somehow jam into my FJ all the time along with assorted camping gear if I'm going car camping. The best thing I found for keeping enough space for... The driver, has been my Yakima Skybox18.. I have not had a chance to pack up the 4Runner yet, but I imaging there will be a little more room in it. The FJ does have some more tiedowns on the back of the seats and you can also hook onto the seat catch if you have the rear seats laid down.

Platform storage boxes. Made from 1/2" plywood, glued biscuit joints, anti slip rubber on top. Sturdy with extra 3/4" ply on top. Full-extension drawer slides. Each box width is sized to the 60/40 seat sizes. Smaller box can be placed onto large one and seat back can be laid flat. Also, since both are individual one or the other can be removed. System is not full depth allowing for room to sit inside the cabin while maintaing some headroom, nice thing to do with the hatch open. Drawers can be held in open position on incline with a pin system. Latches keep them closed. Front and rear turnbuckles keep it in place. Metal hooks allow for an assortment of bungies to be criss crossed, straight, etc. or across the front to keep everything else where it should be kept.

continuous track is the best, but I could not work that in with even mildly padded carpet. i guess I could have done it right on the edge of the sides, that probably would have worked. anyways, that's why I went with recessed rings.

Corrected your statement a bit :yo: But yes, I would like to gave them recessed in some way to the floor of the cargo unit.

I think that I would want something that could allow for adding unit when needed and removing them when I don't, quickly. Making the most versatile use of the space.

I have thought the same thing! I have been wondering if this would work: Landcruiser Attic

BROG makes some QUALITY gear, and I know that if I called they could make me a custom unit. Check it out!

I like that. I think it would work between the rear seat grab handles and the hooks over the cargo area, if the hooks were replaced with d rings.

I would like to get some Outback storage Solutions though after having this for a couples years, only reason would be for the roll out fridge for my Pelican cooler, and I'd like to separate my work gear from my fun gear, well my work gear is also fun though...

I built a set of drawers, carpeted the outside, and put a hinged flap across the back for a clean look and to keep the drawers shut. Everything is bolted down with hidden fasteners from the inside, again, to keep it looking clean; a set of self-tapping screws into the cross brace on one end, and 1/4" bolts/spring nuts bolted through to piece of unistrut that I bolted down with the cargo tray bolts. Very handy for keeping small items easily accessible when camping.
