The Cargo Management Thread

Well, I posted this a while back, looking to gain some insight into what people thought was needed in the back of the 4Runner to help with managing cargo when loaded. I have since built my 4Runner Platform, and have pretty much ticked all of the boxes above that I originally thought would be beneficial. For a more in depth look at the platform, click here.

Very cool man! Looks great!

My setup for sleeping two people - just finished up a road trip to Alaska and back in this. Also using the 4Runner Attic for the cargo net storage - works great for pillows and blankets while we are driving. I use some cheap Thermarest foam pads to shim the bottom surface level, then put down two NeoAir Dream pads which are quite comfy. When we are on the road we stack the mattresses on top of each other, leaving half of the area open for storage - backpacks, work area, etc.

Since we sleep in the back, we store as much as possible in two Pelican 1650's that are bolted to the roof rack.

That looks really comfortable. My lady would really like for me to set up something like this, but with the dog kennel, and the other set-up I usually carry along for trips. I keep telling her to hang in there for a a roof top tent :becky:

Really nice set up, man!

Thanks! Definitely a lot of different ways to go about it. Not sure what I would have done had a furry friend been on board! Probably would go the RTT route as well. :thumb:

What lights are those?

Thanks

approve. have you used it? really digging the simplicity you've got going on there.
Not "cargo management" specifically but a few days ago I also built a basic platform to fit in the cargo area (mine is non 3rd seat equipped) to raise the floor 2.5" so that the entire area is flat when the seats are laid down. This is to make it more comfortable to sleep on top of. We recently tried to sleep in the cargo area with the seats folded down and the drop between the seat backs and the cargo floor was annoying, even with an air mattress to kind of fill the gap.

I thought about making this into a storage cubby like a lot of guys have, but I really have no use for that space, and it was exponentially easier to make this "pallet style" platform. I'm currently putting black upholstery on it so it will blend better.

It's built with 2 pieces of 1/2" plywood stacked on top of each other, perfectly fitted so as to drop into the cargo area and not move around at all - 43.5" wide by 38.5" long. It's screwed to 4 strips of 2"x2" (which are actually 1.5" x 1.5" if you aren't familiar with the retarded manner in which lumber is measured) laid front-to-back, 37.5" long and spaced to a 41.3" wide footprint (so the plywood just slightly overhangs the base on either side and the rear and thus snugs up against the plastic fascia panels in the cargo area). In the picture, the 2x2s appear to be not centered up, this is because the design of the seat backs and the rear seat mounts require you to slightly offset the middle two 2x2s.

Because it is perfectly fit to the void area, you don't need to bolt it down, it just drops in on top of the existing carpet. There is no slop or movement while driving / cornering. I suppose aggressive off road might cause it to bounce up and down a little though. Can be removed in 5 seconds if I'm not camping out of the back. You do have to remove the angled plastic / carpeted panel that slopes down between the seat backs and the cargo floor so this will fit flush - you unbolt the two D rings with 10mm socket and it comes right up.

I use it all the time. At least one a month, we take a 3 day trip. It's way nicer than sleeping with that stupid cargo area-to-rear seat hump in the middle of your back.

I never did carpet it though.

For sleeping: basically it's the pallet, Rubbermaid totes in the footwells, and the air mattress. The invertor is perfectly placed to inflate the air mattress with a small 120V compressor.

Didn't realize how old that post was. But good to know it's working out. Looks like a good, simple solution to a common issue.

Now, those Rubbermaid boxes. Also super clean. Know the size?

Action Packer #1170, 8 gallon. They were kind of hard to find locally, surprisingly. I had to order then from Rubbermaid.

They can't be used with the front seats in driving position, you have to slide the front seats all the way forward. Just FYI....

And here's another way to replace the ceiling hooks by the tailgate. The loop is from a cargo tie down left over from my totalled Xterra.

Pry open plastic on stock hook. Unscrew. Screw in the Xterra loop (threads are same). Done.

I wonder, why is replacement necessary?
