The dangers of buying used...

I know this is not typical but watching this video made me cringe when thinking about buying a used 4runner... Someone out there will eventually buy this used vehicle...

2000 4Runner! One owner Carfax! New tires! Super clean! Low miles!

hahahaha.

This makes me think very seriously about buying new... starting from 0 miles rather than 100k with unknown abuse possibly in there....

Not knowing your locale I can't vouch for used prices in your area but in Central Iowa used 4R's must have gold under the paint. I started by watching Certified units at the dealer and found very little price adjustment on 2-3 year olds. With the discount I got on my 2015 it was actually cheaper to buy new for us. I did spend a few extra dollars to extend the warranty to 100k miles but with all the expensive electronic things like Nav A/C etc, I think it may be money well spent.

I'm a big believer in new over used, just never know. Granted now that is a bit extreme..... While shopping for my TE I was willing to fly somewhere where to find the perfect used low mileage black TE with leather, sunroof, and KDSS. Ended up paying just about the same for a brand new 2014 without the KDSS, coulda cared less about seats and roof after selling my truck, and couldn't be happier. Just nice knowing the "whoops" I've made in it are my "whoops" and not someone else's.

Def will NOT do that to my truck though. Once a weekend in my Jeep back in HS was enough.

He drove thru a mudhole. BFD. He got it really dirty. Nothing a thorough wash n detail wouldn't take care of. Rockcrawling is MUCH tougher on a vehicle. :boink:

I don't know man. I've done some pretty good rock crawling and the only risk (for the most part) is body damage or CVs.

Driving through mud or water can really F up your:
* Transmission
* Engine

The cost of replacing each is much much higher than minor body damage. I'm not afraid to do some blue/black trails but I would NEVER drive into a mud pit or lake.

I was commenting on this particular vid but yeah mud bogging(of which I did a lot of) will also wreak havoc on your electricals too. In this case he didn't drown it so no real harm. I hydro-locked my '93 YJ 2.5L several times(oops). Pull the plugs, crank all the water out, hit the distributor with WD40 and get the oil changed ASAP. Rockcrawling I would add clutches, axles, broken R&Ps, bent driveshafts, bent rims, cut sidewalls and the possibility of a rollover. $$$!!! I don't mud bog cause the clean ups a *****. Just my .02
