The dreded dead clock syndrome

The OO had a Pioneer stereo installed in my new/old 99, so searching this forum, I found that whoever installed it may have plugged the clock power into the dummy block on the tailgate window switch. But my story is two fold. My tailgate window dash switch would not work either. Figured they must have messed that up too. Sure enough, they had plugged the connector into the dummy, so I just plugged it back in to the right connector, and guess what? My clock still didn't work. Power was there, but no clock. Oh well, no big deal. The stereo has a clock, I can live with that, but the tailgate window I could not. I struggled with this for quite awhile. Why I asked myself would there be a dummy block right behind the window switch? Then in my thinking, I thought my other 4Runner is an SR5. Maybe this one is a base model and it's not set up for a dash control window. I took the key and tried it at the tailgate. Yep, it goes up and down. Still thinking that maybe the dash switch is there, but having a dummy connector, my base model is not wired for it. Finally, I took a look at the owners manual. Somehow I had accidentally hit the window lock button that as long as I owned my SR5, I have never,ever used it, and never paid any attention to it. Long story short, the window lock out button works, trust me.:redface: Yep, I'm an idiot.

Trust me, you're not the first - or last - victim of the window lock button. I've done it more than once myself :redbrick:

Trust me, you're not the first - or last - victim of the window lock button. I've done it more than once myself :redbrick:

Thanks, maybe now I won't feel so bad. I'll live without it for now, but for some insane reason, I miss it. I'm so use to seeing it light up on my other one...well you know what I'm saying.

Oddly, my 2000 has almost 200,000 on it, and the clock still works just fine. But I still have the stock stereo in it so the connector has never been violated. Do you think that the sheer act of unplugging them and plugging them back in might have something to do with it?

You can pick up a new clock piece from a junkyard for like $5 - $10. They are practically worthless as a resale item and are not kept when the vehicle is scrapped.

Take it apart and clean the contact surfaces between the two circuit boards. That may fix you up. Mine had soda scum inside the clock. They are not difficult to take apart.

Cracked or loose solder point . Very easy fix. If you but a used one it will fail same way.

If I remember there are pen type springs that connect the two boards. Just cleaning them is what fixed my clock. I could smack the dash and the clock would come on.

Where is the lock button? My tailgate wont roll down and id like to try switching that on and off before i go tearing apart my tailgate.

its the window lock button on the drivers door by all the window switches

I just did the ebay thing, paid $16 which included return post. the clock works like new
