So lots of knowledgable people here apparently. Let's hear it pros and cons. I think here we can keep it civil and have a nice discussion. Reino is not invited. COB, Dusty, JB, Mt. Rush and others are welcome. I honestly would like to know. I know all about alcohol lol. Keep it civil and everyone may learn something.

I only smoked a handful of times and when I did, I got hungry, happy, and sleepy. That's it. I preferred to drink instead since it is easier to control how messed up you get.

Haven't touched it in several years though and don't really miss it. Maybe when I'm old I'll start again and watch movies all day.

Let's all just remember a few things about this thread before starting:

1. Let's keep it civil. Please, no name calling or anything of the sort.
2. This topic is technically against the rules, however marijuana has gained recent popularity in the mainstream since these rules were established, so I think it can slide.
3. Have fun and please don't take anything too personal.

Thank you.

Based on personal experience only I don't believe there are any negative effects of pot. The same experience also proved the opposite with alcohol. As I said, this is simply personal experience from a guy from a family with full of CD issues. Putting my money where my mouth is I'll add I quit drinking 30+ years ago and have been a pot smoker for 40+ years. Yes, I'm an "old guy" who likes the Colorado Amendment simply because it removes what was a minor hassle in the past.

Since it needs to be said nobody should drive impaired by smoking pot, drinking alcohol or taking prescription meds. I've lost family members and friends to drunk driving but none to driving when stoned.

A funny case study

For discussion sake, lets say we're observing 2 houses on a Friday night. A pot smoker lives in House A and is planning on having some (5+/-) friends over to get high. In house B, a guy and his buddy are just about to crack open the first beer.

As everyone shows up at House A, they get high and start talking about whatever type of weed they're smoking "Frankenberry" for example. By this time, the guys in House B have finished their first beers and called a couple more friends, who bring more beers. As the group in House B starts to grow, the group in House A smokes more and continues to discuss the the effect that Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon has had on every piece of music written since it's release. Though all of them agree on how awesome this rock symphony is, they decide to get high again and listen to the album from start to finish.

At this point the guys over in House B are a couple beers deep and call more friends to come over and bring more beer. By now, the TV is on, the stereo is on (louder) to drown out the TV and people are on their phones telling more people about about the "party." Another 5-10 people show up at House B and the people at House A have to start Dark Side over because they got to talking about something else and forgot to listen to how awesome it is. So they pack another bowl and try to re-focus their attention.

By now, we have a full fledged party kicking over at House B (20+ people). The music's turned up and people are starting to shout at each other since they can't hear over the music. But wait, guy#1 has just challenged guy#2 to see who can bong a beer faster. As the bongs are filled up, the cans are tossed into a mounting pile of cans and bottles where the trash can used to be. This is about the time that House A orders pizzas. Unfortunately, the pizza guy is late to deliver because some jack hole over at House B parked like a d-bag in the middle of the street because his girlfriend told him she was just doing a girl's night and he found out she was really going over to the party at this other dude's house.

The pizza guy finds another way to get around to House A. Lucky for him, the pot heads forgot they ordered pizza, so they weren't even mad he was late. In fact, they were so happy to see him that they invited him in to get high with them - which of course he accepted. Once House A is finished regenerating their buzz, they decide to sync up Dark Side withe the Wizard of Oz and start talking about the midget that hung himself during production and how the government covered it up to protect themselves from Communists while they eat their pizza. Well, they can't find the DVD, so they just eat their pizza. They're about to spark another bowl when they hear a ruckus outside.

The d-bag that parked in the middle of the street is outside yelling at his girlfriend (who was supposed to be "out with the girls") when the winner of the beer bong contest decides to be chivalrous and come to her aid. A fight breaks out on the front lawn. And, before too long, the cops show up and warn House B to move all the cars and chill out. For a while, their party seems to have died, but then a second wave of party goers show up because they got a text about the fight. People are out in the front yard talking about it (loudly) and re-inacting the drama. There are a couple guys without shirts standing around. No one knows why they don't have shirts on, they just don't.

Wait, what happened to the pot heads? Well, they found the dvd and started watching it. It took a couple tries to get the first track of Dark Side synced up wit the Metro Goldwin Mayer Lion Roar but they got it. MOst of them were just about to pass out when Time came on and scared the sh!t out of them. They woke up and watched the movie for a couple more minutes before falling back asleep.

Its getting late. The pot heads decide to sleep it off for a few hours before driving home because it is about 1:30am. They know bars are closing and the cops are going to be out looking for drunk drivers that are leaving the bars. Likewise, some of the drunks from House B decide to try and drive home before they get waaaay to drunk to drive. One guy passed out in his front seat while a group of 4 hopped into a jeep, took out a mailbox while they're yelling and laughing about how drunk they are and what they're going to get a Jack in the Box.

Fast forward to tomorrow morning. The guy from House A is up around 10. He takes a few pizza boxes out to the trash and even picks up a hand full of random beer cans/bottles from House B while walking the dog. The guy from House B is super hung over and stays in bed all day. Rolls out around 3, so he can hit the bar and pre-drink before going over to someone else's house for a kegger. On Sunday afternoon, he finds himself collapsed the couch, still hung over, feeling like crap with a mess in his house and no food in the fridge, wondering how in the hell he got so drunk and if he has another sick day so he can call in tomorrow.

I'm in the law enforcement field so I can't participate :P

But with that said, I think marijuana should be legal much more so than alcohol.

MOST get high, discuss some ****ty politics, listen to some music, eat and pass out.

Hell the gov't could even tax it for all I care, make a boat load of money on it, and watch DUI's go down.

Alcohol on the other hand, drunk drivers, fights, domestic abuse, etc.

But hey we're America....don't touch our alcohol...but damned if those kids wanna smoke a little pot.

I guess I'm of the thinking of personal freedom/choice. And quite clearly the war on drugs was a failure from the get go. Legalize it, tax/regulate it, and end our war on drugs. Harder drug use along with synthetic use will go down (spice, k2, bath salts, huffing, meth, etc), you would stimulate the economy vastly IMHO, it would be a major deterrence on our current southern cartel friends to make a profit and they would take their business and violence else where. Sure we would still have to deal with the coke problem but just like any other law created, there will always be those that choose to break the law and no amount of laws will stop that.

Sorry for rambling on, but I'd much rather be friends or deal with a pot head than a drunk/alcoholic.

Pharmaceutical companies also have a major stronghold on the FDA/politicians/medical world. To me they are a major reason medical marijuana and the likes have not been overall successful in their push to become legalized. Lastly, marijuana is a state issue. I work for the feds and it's disgusting to me the way we in the DOJ choose to enforce certain federal laws and not others to fit a certain administration's agenda. (i.e. Arizona immigration laws (taken straight from our own Federal laws) yet our Federal government, more so our AG and CIC suing the state for doing what the AG and CIC were sworn to uphold).

As opposed to alcohol where many still get the munchies, cotton mouth, beer belly, lack of exercise because you're hung over, lack of sex performance b/c of whiskey d!ck or puking, increased legal bills from being arrested for fighting, public intoxication, loud music, drunken spending sprees online, spending more money every time you drink b/c you're increasing your alcohol tolerance, blood shot eyes, ability to sit there passed out while your ol lady nags the **** out of you and driving on road thinking you're safer b/c everything is moving slower in your mind....

increased legal bills from being arrested for fighting (only if youre smoking weed with crack in it), public intoxication (don't know how that's possible when weed makes you quiet and subdued unless you're smoking weed laced with crack), loud music (yes), drunken spending sprees online (yes but high), spending more money every time you drink b/c you're increasing your alcohol tolerance (good stuff you only need one hit and it lasts for hours. Spending $50 on a bag lasts a few days for some, weeks for others. You can drop $50 in a bar on 3 drinks). This is what my buddies tell me.

I'm talking about alcohol. :spy:

Most of us who grew up in the '60's and 70's either did or had buddies who smoked pot. Yes, they were an affable bunch but their decision making skills while high, and I do mean in every facet of life, was suspect to say the least. Happy, yes. Cognitive and smart, um no. That is one of the points I want to question. Now, not that they would jump off the roof if I told them to but a lot of times the opposite: They would not step off a low wall that was only two feet high. They would think about it and then slowly climb down instead of simply stepping down like any person not under any influences.
My point is ANY altering of thought by anything is dangerous. What say you?

I completely agree. And, going back to the last thread, I wouldn't want someone under the influence (of anything) to drive because they're putting themselves and others at risk.

With that said, my story above is meant to point out that people under the influence of alcohol are more inclined to get loud, rowdy, aggressive than those under the influence of pot.

Per your experience, I think you'd have a much easier time convincing someone that is drunk to jump off a roof into a pool than someone that is high. While being high is still considered intoxicated, I don't think it impairs people's judgement nearly as much as alcohol. Again, referencing your story, the friends that were high were more cautious than someone that is sober. I think people that get high are conscious of the fact that they are high and in turn realize that they have to be much more careful than if they were sober because they don't want to get caught and have people blame the drug.

Of course, we're kind of painting with wide brush strokes here and I don't think we can make blanket statements that say all drinkers are "X" or all pot smokers are "Y" There are bad seeds in both camps that (unfortunately) give their group a bad rep. To my understanding, there are a lot more vehicular deaths from drunk driving than stoned driving

Can't support marijuana knowing the effects of obtaining it- Cartels and gangs, bloodshed, turf wars, would call it a gateway drug since most of the time, same people are selling marijuana, and other drugs. Higher profit margins on other drugs for less amount of space- either in pocket, backpack, vehicle. Other than getting hungry and stupid with the "stoner laugh," and alcohol's benefits in MODERATION (ie 2-3 drinks per day- AMA) and haven't seen any benefits of marijuana use other than those receiving cancer and pain management. Don't get me wrong, tobacco products should be illegal but I also feel that way about fast food...I digress with my rambling

I understand and agree. Let me give you another for instance:
I ride a mountain bike on singletrack and there are many places I ride that demand split second timing and complete concentration. If I wanted to "improve" my concentration I would not drink beer or smoke pot. I would get plenty or rest and eat right and train. I'm sure caffeine in small amounts would not hurt either. In that vein F1 drivers probably don't get high before a Grand Prix either. My point is EITHER of those substances decrease performance.
Now for the others side:
Sleepy drivers, texting drivers or just plain turrible drivers on the road cause their fair share of accidents too. I'm quite sure I could have a few beers and still outperform many of those drivers. Point is I don't do that. Reason? Because it diminishes MY performance behind the wheel. I think other guys are hung up on "Well, even though I am high I am still better than most drivers sober." Maybe so. There could be a situation that happens that if the guy were completely sober his improved reaction time could have saved the day. That's what I mean. Yes, there are bad, dumb and terrible drivers on the road. That does not give me an excuse to stoop to their level.

Exactly! But for those drivers that think (and might be better drivers than most on the road, it's not hard), if one of the terrible drivers causes a wreck and hits the person under the influence of pot- same as 'scripts or alcohol, it will be determined to be the user's fault. Now, that can get pricy with the insurance programs today- not just vehicles but having to go to the hospital for a few stitches or severe- the user is paying for ALL of it. Like it or not, its the law.

A long time ago my son came home from school one day and I asked him how he did on his math test. He said "Dad, I got a "B" but that was the highest grade in the class." I told him I was proud of him but I asked "Son, was a "B" the best you could do? If it is then great!" He thought a minute and said "No, I could have got an "A" if I didn't make a few stupid mistakes." Lesson: Even though might be better than your peers that still might not be the best YOU can do. It's sorta like being the best player on a bad team. You don't know how good you really are or could be. Don't fall into that trap.

Thus an even bigger and better reason to legalize it in all the states. Colorado just even decriminalizing it over 10 years ago ruined the marijuana trade coming in from out of state since the local growers supply the state with better stuff than ever came from Mexico. I have quite a few friends that smoke (I'm a medical license carrier too) and the quality and ease of obtaining has never been easier or cheaper and with the passing of 64 our law enforcement can fight real crime.
