The Effects of Pot

Avid smoker for about 15 years. On a "deserted island" I'd far and away pick some funky kind bud over alcohol of any kind.

The strain dictates the high. I prefer sativa v indica. Sativa is more a mind buzz let's do a project or something fun kind of high v indica being more a body numbing couch-lock kind of high.

I'm not supporting any gang violence or cartels as it's all locally grown indoor with smaller yields by people I know.

Cons? ^Rambling? lol.

Alcohol is far more damaging than pot in my experience, it's much more expensive, takes a much higher toll on your body, causes far worse decision making, and is much more habit forming. I used to drink a lot when I was in university (like most), and still remember DRAGGING my ass out of bed to make my 10:30AM class after a night of drinking, and I lived on campus! I don't have any hangover effects from smoking, and find it improves my quality of life far more than drinking ever did.

I'm now a couple drinks a week user (socially, on weekends), and a regular smoker (~5 times a week). I never got into tobacco, and I'm very thankful of that, it should be taxed 10X what it currently is to make up for the increased healthcare costs (Canadian line of thinking I guess due to our taxpayer funded healthcare system).

Ian brings up a good point as it relates to addiction. I have yet to see (convincing) evidence that marijuana is addictive. Alcoholism, on the other hand, is a well documented "illness" that effects a lot of people. Though smoking can be habit forming, it is not chemically addictive and there is no risk of over dosing, like some harder drugs (including alcohol poisoning). From personal experience, I think it is easier to get out of hand with alcohol where its nearly impossible with weed.

How many people have started a night saying, "I'll stop in for a quick drink" and end up closing the bar down with your buds. I think it is easier to loose track of how many drinks you've had and get completely wasted with alcohol. Also, alcohol can cause you to "black out" but I don't believe anyone has ever gotten "black out" high. They may have fallen asleep/passed out, but never continued functioning with no recollection of what happened the next day. That's scary.

Granted these "extreme behaviors" are more common among the younger crowd because they haven't learned moderation is the key. That said, I think a lot of older people can/do still get completely wasted on alcohol (think back to your Christmas Parties) but smokers don't get totally blitzed once they mature.
1engineer I don't think anyone is debating the validity of your point as it relates to driving. I think the conversation (now) has shifted to people trying to help others understand that smoking weed is not as evil as some would have you believe. I would encourage people with questions to check out The Union. It is available to stream for Netflix and is pretty interesting. I enjoyed it very much for it's informational value and straight forward approach to our current situation as it relates to legalization of marijuana.

For discussion sake, lets say we're observing 2 houses on a Friday night. A pot smoker lives in House A and is planning on having some (5+/-) friends over to get high. In house B, a guy and his buddy are just about to crack open the first beer.

As everyone shows up at House A, they get high and start talking about whatever type of weed they're smoking "Frankenberry" for example. By this time, the guys in House B have finished their first beers and called a couple more friends, who bring more beers. As the group in House B starts to grow, the group in House A smokes more and continues to discuss the the effect that Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon has had on every piece of music written since it's release. Though all of them agree on how awesome this rock symphony is, they decide to get high again and listen to the album from start to finish.

At this point the guys over in House B are a couple beers deep and call more friends to come over and bring more beer. By now, the TV is on, the stereo is on (louder) to drown out the TV and people are on their phones telling more people about about the "party." Another 5-10 people show up at House B and the people at House A have to start Dark Side over because they got to talking about something else and forgot to listen to how awesome it is. So they pack another bowl and try to re-focus their attention.

By now, we have a full fledged party kicking over at House B (20+ people). The music's turned up and people are starting to shout at each other since they can't hear over the music. But wait, guy#1 has just challenged guy#2 to see who can bong a beer faster. As the bongs are filled up, the cans are tossed into a mounting pile of cans and bottles where the trash can used to be. This is about the time that House A orders pizzas. Unfortunately, the pizza guy is late to deliver because some jack hole over at House B parked like a d-bag in the middle of the street because his girlfriend told him she was just doing a girl's night and he found out she was really going over to the party at this other dude's house.

The pizza guy finds another way to get around to House A. Lucky for him, the pot heads forgot they ordered pizza, so they weren't even mad he was late. In fact, they were so happy to see him that they invited him in to get high with them - which of course he accepted. Once House A is finished regenerating their buzz, they decide to sync up Dark Side withe the Wizard of Oz and start talking about the midget that hung himself during production and how the government covered it up to protect themselves from Communists while they eat their pizza. Well, they can't find the DVD, so they just eat their pizza. They're about to spark another bowl when they hear a ruckus outside.

The d-bag that parked in the middle of the street is outside yelling at his girlfriend (who was supposed to be "out with the girls") when the winner of the beer bong contest decides to be chivalrous and come to her aid. A fight breaks out on the front lawn. And, before too long, the cops show up and warn House B to move all the cars and chill out. For a while, their party seems to have died, but then a second wave of party goers show up because they got a text about the fight. People are out in the front yard talking about it (loudly) and re-inacting the drama. There are a couple guys without shirts standing around. No one knows why they don't have shirts on, they just don't.

Wait, what happened to the pot heads? Well, they found the dvd and started watching it. It took a couple tries to get the first track of Dark Side synced up wit the Metro Goldwin Mayer Lion Roar but they got it. MOst of them were just about to pass out when Time came on and scared the sh!t out of them. They woke up and watched the movie for a couple more minutes before falling back asleep.

Its getting late. The pot heads decide to sleep it off for a few hours before driving home because it is about 1:30am. They know bars are closing and the cops are going to be out looking for drunk drivers that are leaving the bars. Likewise, some of the drunks from House B decide to try and drive home before they get waaaay to drunk to drive. One guy passed out in his front seat while a group of 4 hopped into a jeep, took out a mailbox while they're yelling and laughing about how drunk they are and what they're going to get a Jack in the Box.

Fast forward to tomorrow morning. The guy from House A is up around 10. He takes a few pizza boxes out to the trash and even picks up a hand full of random beer cans/bottles from House B while walking the dog. The guy from House B is super hung over and stays in bed all day. Rolls out around 3, so he can hit the bar and pre-drink before going over to someone else's house for a kegger. On Sunday afternoon, he finds himself collapsed the couch, still hung over, feeling like crap with a mess in his house and no food in the fridge, wondering how in the hell he got so drunk and if he has another sick day so he can call in tomorrow.

That is one PERFECT study....man you couldnt of said anything different in that. Spot on!!

Thus an even bigger and better reason to legalize it in all the states. Colorado just even decriminalizing it over 10 years ago ruined the marijuana trade coming in from out of state since the local growers supply the state with better stuff than ever came from Mexico. I have quite a few friends that smoke (I'm a medical license carrier too) and the quality and ease of obtaining has never been easier or cheaper and with the passing of 64 our law enforcement can fight real crime.

haha right, kind of like the gangsters and cartels that ran a muck during prohibition in the 20's.... that was bad reasoning on op's part.....

also, just because you have met some less than intelligent pot smokers doesn't mean they are not out there, i happen to be friends with a neurological research surgeon who smokes lots of pot along with various people in my industry who are very smart, (i don't claim to be one of them) graduating from the top colleges in the country and now holding very important jobs, i think we need to get past this whole stupid frigging thing of blaming objects such as guns and drugs for peoples bad decisions, and addiction should never be justification for a crime or wrong doing, but yet it is and people often point to banning things because of this stupid mentality, i'm sorry but you made the decision to do wrong not the drugs or booze, i know plenty of other people who got blacked out and just decided to sleep in their car instead of driving and i know plenty of people who made the decision to drive, and some of them, it cost them their lives, and honestly some of those people where never good decision makers, even back in grade school before the chance of drugs and booze....
basically people should just man up and say they did wrong when they did, instead of whining and sniveling why they did wrong, who cares? you screwed up, own it...... i'm really tired of people just being weak and ruining the world , the gun thread has me pissed because of peoples weakness and fear, this thread has me pissed off because of peoples weakness and fear...

don't get me wrong, i screw up all of the time, but i admit it and don't try to blame anyone else for my folly , i think the guys here who managed to get away from addiction aren't the ones i'm talking about, i'm talking about the ones who spend their whole lives in and out of rehab,i get sometimes people need help and do believe in addiction to a certain level, but just like political correctness it has gone to far and become a a easy way for weak people to remain weak and do bad things while the rest of society lets them have a pass for it......i think we need to knock it the "f" off with all of this social engineering BS , making laws to the lowest common denominator, and hold people accountable.... YOU chose to drink and drive and ended up to killing people, not drinkers, YOU chose to smoke pot and xxxxx, not pot smokers, you chose to kill a bunch of people, not gun owners......quit punishing the many for the actions of a few , that's not a free society, freedom centers around personal responsibility and accountability in my mind.....

yeah, so there's my rant on these couple of threads that have been floating around for the past few days, i'm out of it as i really have nothing nice to say or to add that's of any real value, i just see it such and am becoming ill from by all i can call pussies posting a bunch of crap had to say my piece just to feel better, so sorry for subjecting you guys to this, not looking to start a fight, and this is not directed entirely even at this thread, it's more in general to this thread and a few others, sorry if i have offended, i respect all of you if we agree or not, again sorry for my rant! haha....:flame::flame::hug::hug:

also that quick delete was awesome mods, haha...if you think this is too out there feel free to delete it as well.

I've participated once before, years ago, but with was with many shots of tequila in between and rum and beer chasers so I can't really remember the specific effects. I just know I had a blast but then was scared to death for months that my name would get picked for a random drug screening. I'm told I was a lot of fun that night. I have too much to lose to do it again though so I steer clear.

That said, even if legalized, I'd still avoid smoking anything due to the health effects. I'd probably lean more towards the baked goods if legalized, if I knew it wouldn't jeopardize my employment, and if I was in a safe environment and planned to stay in for the time being. I do support legalization though for various reasons.

I'm not sure I agree or disagree with you Lizard King, I read your post more times than I'll admit but I'm not getting your point.

You believe in "addiction to a certain level" is interesting and weird, what level of alcoholism do you believe in? What level of heroin addition do you believe in? Addiction is real and there's no such thing as a little addicted.

Please tell me about this "social engineering" you mention. I'm not arguing, just trying to understand the concept.

I mean what I said , your picking out asingle phrase at an attempt to find flaw in my point ,
And you should probably Google social engineering if you don't what I mean by that , not being snobby as I like you from previous exchanges , but also not going to get dragged into samantics , in short mind over body if that makes you feel better ,with some sort of explanation, I don't care to go into my own personal addiction story , but it was much worse than booze or pot , I can honestly say from experience addiction is pure weakness nothing more , the physical side off addiction is very short on most things, mental addiction is just weakness and gives people a cop out , at the end of the day it comes down to making a descision to not do the drugs and booze....that's basically what I mean

I agree with your post for the most part.

But what's this about mods? The only two posts that have been deleted in this thread were deleted by those who posted them.

A poster that was mentioned in the op , posted here with something that wouldn't end well , even better to see self moderation!

Thanks, I understand what you're saying now. My apologies if I came across as trying to find a flaw in your post. I shouldn't be online today after having oral surgery and refusing pain killers...

haha, no worries, like i said , we've talked before and i think you're an alright guy(like my opinion matters, ha!), i just didn't want to get into some argument after that response to you, again sorry if i came across as sounding like some macho jerk, but seriously have you seen how some of the other threads have been going....i have no wish in joining in on that drivel.....:lalala:

hope you're face feels better man, haha, that's just one of those things that i hate, it's like having my eyes messed with...just no..no thanks..no sir...no way..haha.

Most of us who grew up in the '60's and 70's either did or had buddies who smoked pot. Yes, they were an affable bunch but their decision making skills while high, and I do mean in every facet of life, was suspect to say the least. Happy, yes. Cognitive and smart, um no. That is one of the points I want to question. Now, not that they would jump off the roof if I told them to but a lot of times the opposite: They would not step off a low wall that was only two feet high. They would think about it and then slowly climb down instead of simply stepping down like any person not under any influences.
My point is ANY altering of thought by anything is dangerous. What say you?

I don't thinking smoking weed and being smart have anything to do with one another. I know tons and tons of successful people who smoke. For some who choose to use it, it releves stress, stimulates thought, etc.

As with everything, moderation is key

Back on topic, hijack over.

:hail:1Engineer:hail:, you are telling me that no one who went to your engineering school smoked and was still successful?

I don't smoke and never tried because I joined USN at 18. Then I got out at 24 yrs old and it didn't seem that cool so I never tried it. I also wanted to keep my options open for working in government or defense and purposely avoided trying it.

BUT ... I knew a lot of engineers, math and science students who occasionally smoked. One of my friends in particular scored in top 5% (nationally, of people who take the test) on a sciences portion of the MCATs and he smoked at least a few times a month. Not a pot-head or anything but definitely a smoker.

You seem to hold these views that anyone who smokes is not as smart as those who don't.

their decision making skills while high, and I do mean in every facet of life, was suspect to say the least. Happy, yes. Cognitive and smart, um no.

Just to be clear, when you say "skills while high" I don't believe you mean on-drugs. I think you very clearly mean they held "decent or reasonably-high" decision making skills but were NOT cognitive & smart.

So your comment that they are "not smart" really sticks out. I mean do you really believe that no-one at MIT smokes? That no-one who is in top of their class in any field including math and science smokes? BECAUSE I've known a some pretty top of their class people who smoke or did-smoke at one point.

WOW ... :hail:1Engineer:hail:

^Its a silly statement. A good friend smoked growing up and is now doing ground breaking research in theoretical physics. I know a lot of other people who smoked and are also quite successful. Its a silly stereotype and like most stereotypes doesn't hold up to any level of real scrutiny.

Also we are forgetting about the effect it has on people that actually benefit from the medical side of marijuana and I for one like it because it doesn't interact with my prescription meds unlike alcohol. I primarily use it to help me sleep since I work nights and after 20 years on the job my knees and ankles hurt like ***** in the morning so a little pot helps ease the pain.

I definitely did not mean they were not smart people. Some of the guys were/are highly intelligent people. I meant some of the decisions they made while high were not smart. Sorry I was not clear. I was not very smart at times back then either.

I'm blown away by how quickly things can change and that we can have a comfortable discussion about this.

I had a great talk with my 24 year old niece recently (great because it was now an adult talk). She was pretty wild in her youth but now seems uninterested in pot and such things. I told her how, for a very long time, I've been utterly incredulous that the war on drugs - especially as it involves marijuana - could manage to stay in place, decade after decade, and that I'd been watching with great interest what has been happening in her original home state of Colorado, fascinated to sit by and watch in real time what it takes to turn a tide. Anyway, she told me that the pot that is out there now is not your Grandfather's pot. She said it is way stronger than anything I would remember and, in fact, is much stronger than what she experienced in her time.

So that is my question to those with experience that covers the timeline involved (say, at least a decade). Are my assumptions about the effects, based on personal experience long ago, outdated in a way that would require a serious reassessment on my part?

That makes a lot more sense. I was being sarcastic with my questions ...

I don't think anyone is tip-top while under the influence of any drug.

Has ANYONE mentioned that prescription drug use is the #1 drug problem in America?
