The Father Teaching his Daughter a lesson, Reactions?

Well, parenting DOES have a big effect on how we all came up (and yes I guaruntee most of us HAVE said something stupid too, or about our parents at one time or another when we were young. I KNOW I've done it, but you realize later why it all happened, and you thank them for beating your ass after you realize). But in the same effect, the ignorance and arrogence our kids are around now-a-days in school from some teachers & also depending on who they choose to hang around with, takes a huge effect on them as well. It's said, that a way to get to know yourself, is by seeing what types of people you hang around with; that can also be said about teens & some of their decision-making. We all lash out, but at the same time, we need to beat the kids ass when they get out of line, as well as trying to sit down and have a mature and respectable talk with them.

That's my point...in my wildest dream, i would NOT tell my friends that i would let my parents rod and die on their own! Not over the phone, nor for giggles and laughs. Again, this is where i was raised differently from you youngsters i guess....

So, if i turn my face away from someone and cuss at them, then it is OK and that i did not mean it?? So, it is only a big deal when you cuss your parents out in front of their face? When is it ever OK to trash talk your parents to anyone?? Wow, there is a HUGE gap of tolerance b/w you and me, JD.

All I'm saying is that it is human nature, you've really never felt the urge to lash out at someone either physically or verbally in your life? Obviously as adults we learn to control our emotions and our reactions, but this is a 15 year old girl we are talking about. I'm not at all saying she was in the right. She should be disciplined. All I said was that I didnt' find it that surprising and the fathers over reaction was ridiculous and childish.

Generalizing your feelings/behaviors onto others? This perfectly shows how the young thinks nowadays!

And no, i did not b!tch nor had half the things she said about my parents. But then again, maybe my parents were good and gave me proper strict discipline that i needed. YMMV.

Complaining about doing a choir or work is not being disrespectful, the way she did it was, and I'm not generalizing, because i've not met a guy who hasn't expressed their displeasure about having to tasks such as choirs.

Only way to solve problem like this is through positivity, talk it out with your kids, work out something that both side can agree with. threat them with respect and maybe they will respect you back. if the people who are suppose to set examples act like immature kids, then imagine how the kids are going to turn out.

So, we should just let kids be themselves without any parenting/rules since Nature will take its course?

No, not at all.

Normal, reasonable rules and discipline are obviously necessary, but if a parent needs to let a kid watch TV for an hour so the parent can relax and then later interact with the child, relaxed and refreshed, that might be better than forbidding the TV over concern about what effect TV can have on a child's adulthood, while passing up personal relaxation and remaining a tired, stressed parent.

Oh yeah, i have gotten into fights in highschool over stuff. Oh yeah, i have lashed out at coworkers (in their face) for doing the wrong thing. Sure, i have complained about various stuff.

HOWEVER, her being disrespectful to the "maid," the utter disrespectful tone that she used (when in fact, the chores are mostly to clean up after HER mess!!), AND the fact that she said that her parents are on their own when they get old IS unacceptable. THAT is my point.

I agree completely John...i highlighted what you wrote as most important. And don't forget what she said about abandoning her parents when they get old. How is it that some of you guys are ignoring that?! It is perfectly OK to say that these days?? :wtf:

Wasn't just recently that she got "grounded"?? She apparently did not learn her lesson too well then. Didn't her father updated her laptop with software for HER to use? Maybe her parents have been giving out too many positive reinforcements!! And seemingly, they have treated her as an adult...until now.

No, not at all.

Oh yeah, that is a given. Of course, the house rules will be reasonable. BUT, if they break them, then firm (and consistent) discipline is in order. Consistency with discipline is something that is very hard to do, but very effective in my experience (as a child and parent).

That's actually the major part that bothered me. That is the only possible way I could think I can repay my parents for what they've done for me; taking care of them when they get old.

I agree. Geez, I am glad that someone other than the old farts on this forum that found this disturbing! And it is still NOT okay to say that behind their back!

Her actions (if she truly did what Dad reported) show that he has been a $hitty parent for 14 or more years.

Dad's actions now show that he continues to be a useless parent and a bad example to others.

Together, they wasted too much of my life and too much of the interweb's bandwidth.

This much i agree with.

Ya, I dont need it in large font. I dont disagree that she was being 'bratty'. All I'm saying is that its not that unusual for a 15 year old girl. But IMO what her father did is over the top, unusual and unacceptable.

As others have said, I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

One of the comments I read on the original video still rings true to me; "Congratulations, you just lost your daughter forever"

Good Morning , I'm a United Statess Marine and have been for most of my life . My 5 children have gone to college. In my house my children had no chores . It was amazing though at how much they helped on there own whithout some gun toting idiot sneaking behind their backs . She talked to her friends , he went on Utube and bashed his flesh and blood to the world. That's not a man . He could have done the same thing without posting it but , then he wouldn't get his 15 min. of fame . SHAME

It just sounds to me like this girl's been Pampered her whole life. Perhaps the dad want to take a firmer hand in parenting are but the mom wouldn't let it happen. There is really no way for us to know for sure.

The things he says she said are pretty terrible and she sounds very spoiled to me.

I agree it is she shouldn't get anything phone laptop excetera in till she buys it on our own but I don't think he should have shot the laptop because of the implied violence.

I don't believe it is just her either I think a whole generation of kids are gonna turn out this way, not all of course but maybe I am a 29 yo/o cynic.

I think there is a whole generation of kids that have grown up with everything handed to them, sometimes even parents doing their HS home work for them. These are " helicopter parents" a term used in multiple articles I have read.

:)

Some of your replies shock me. Have you all never been a teenager? Oh wait, I'm on a 4runner forum so maybe you are all 16.

I value my parents highly but I was a tempered brat when I was 16. I can relate to the daughter. It's a coming of age thing. I have always had it good with my parents and it was deserved but I had a big mouth.

I guess the moron father, who can't even tell how many bullets he has left (whoo, we're working with a genius here, people) isn't trying to have his kids lead by example. Nothing justifies him having a big mouth on Youtube. The daughter may not be a great kid or anything either but damn, he needs some parenting 101.

Dr. Phil replied and so did the dad:

I more or less completely agree with dr. phil. He even makes a few of the points that I did.
