the FINGERPRINTS are back!?!?!?

WTF? I don't know if anyone read my last post, but after dish soap, clay bar, rubbing compound, 2 washes, and 2 waxes, I thought I rid my ride of the fingerprints that were on the truck when purchased. after a few days of rain, I notice they are still visible, and my OCD will not allow it. can a good detailer possible know why they are there, and how to get rid of them? I don't know what could have caused them, I will try to get a picture of them, but I doubt it will come out. they seem like police dust prints, they are black, my only idea is possibly a chemical on a hand that burned the paint maybe? no idea, just frustrating.

Goo gone, maybe... But not the others.

A detailer can probably do it. You may need a stronger compound and/or a buffer. You may just not be able to do enough by hand.

Definetly a no on the gasoline since it will etch the paint with any kind of rubbing.

For reals? I spilled gasoline (91 octane) so many times when filling up. Also used gasoline to take off somebody's bubble gum stuck on top of my hood. No probs so far.

Now hostility towards a fellow member for a comment made..i'm pretty sure he was just tryin' to help..even on the Problems & warranty issues section....maybe you 2 are really friends and i'm just getting the wrong vibe. just an observation..there's no issue here.

No hostility on my end, I don't hold internet grudges. I just want to make sure people don't do something that will permanently damage their vehicle because they were mis-informed. Smearing gasoline on your paint is definitely not a good idea.

I am all for sharing experiences, however there needs to be some discretion when stating an experience as a fact.

Josh and Mike, out of the sandbox. You're both right. Gasoline is harmful to the urethane, however it evaporates before it is able to do any damage. It can be used as a solvent to clean off stubborn residues, but there are products on the market that are much safer for the finish and for the user.

08Medic, after having done all the steps you mentioned, were you able to "feel" the fingerprints embedded into the paint? If you are comfortable wet-sanding, get some 2000 grit and go at it gently. Remember to let the sandpaper soak in water for 5-10 minutes before sanding and keep the area saturated.

As stated previously, everything thus far has been in a calm manner. The anger that a few seem to have drawn out of this thread is nothing more than their personal interpretation of the situation. This is why the internet is difficult to communicate over. Everyone thinks that everyone else is out to get them.

The evaporation rate of gasoline depends on the ambient air temperatures. How long are you willing to let it sit there and fully evaporate? Furthermore, although most of it evaporates, it does leave a residue in the form of a varnish.

Different people have different standards to what they will use on their vehicles. I beat my truck on the trails, but I take damn good care of it at home and I would never let something harmful, no matter how insignificant, touch the paint.

I would actually pick the WD-40 over the goo gone. I've never had anything nasty enough for gasoline. I've used WD-40 to remove stubborn residues on paint with no adverse effects and it works quickly too. I would also recommend trying it before going to the scuff and buff method that Rook mentioned, although that would be my next step.

I've used WD-40 on paint before. No ill effects for me, but if you're going to use it, I take no responsibility.

For Goo-gone and Goof-off, I would use the citruis based versions rather than petroleum based. Petroleum based Goof-off discolors and eats plastics.

well unfortunately It's not as easy as thought to get pics of the prints, and the dull spots aren't showing up well either. If I get pics I will post them, will have to try different lights, it's pissing me off though, the dull spots more than the prints now.

Try setting your camera to a slower shutter speed with the flash off on a tripod to capture the problem area(s).

Temp is one component, vapor pressure is the determining factor for solvents.

Can you feel the fingerprints with your fingers? Are they on top of the paint or embedded? Do you know if the panel was repainted?

Well, I can tell you the panel(s) with the fingerprints have been painted before! When the panel was being preped the tech had sweaty hands, and the fingerprints are the salt from the skin. I've seen it many times, I've even seen entire hand prints come back through! The only way to get rid of them for good is to repaint! You can believe me or not, but I'm 99.9% pos that's what it is!
