The floor gets hot.....real hot!

So I have the interior of my (new to me) 3rd gen stripped out for cleaning, only the driver seat is in it; no carpet. I also removed the heater that goes under the front passenger seat, so it's bare sheet metal.

So I had to drive it to work today and put my backpack there were the front passenger seat normally goes. When I got to work and put my backpack on I noticed it was really warm on my back.

I wondered, "Wow, this is really warm; it's kinda nice. Wait, why is this so warm?!"

I touched the floor of the car where my backpack had been and it was hot, in some places it was damn hot! Like can't touch it for more than a second or so without burning myself hot.

I haven't crawled under the truck yet but I'm guessing that's where the cat is. But shouldn't there be a heat shield above it? I'm wondering if the previous owner maybe removed it (wouldn't be surprised judging form the other things that have been removed and I've had to replace).

Does anyone else have a heat shield above their cat or noticed the floor getting really hot at that spot?

You are correct, that's exactly where the exhaust/cat is, underneath there should be heatshields on teh bottom of the floorboards, but they're relatively small and minimal, so without carpet and the padding you would probably notice quite a bit of heat.
