the horrible gas milage my 04 is getting

When I notice my mpg starting to get below 15 I unplug the negative of the battery which I'm guessing resets the cpu on the car and then I'm getting around 17 again. V8 255/75/17

Seriously, you can disconnect the battery and get better gas mileage?? Thats a new one on me but then again I just learned you can clean a catalytic converter by heating it up. I just got my Runner and have not figured out the mileage but it says 360 on the range after filling. I just had the cat cleaned, new plugs, new sensor (not sure which brand) and just bought some MAP cleaner and cleaned the MAP. Now I am curious as to what I am getting.

bad fuel mileage

After reading through this whole post from page 1 to 13.... I have come up with a couple things I would have asked when talking to the OP.

1. if you replaced anything did you use OE equipment or an aftermarket brand... toyota likes the denso or beck/arnley

2. if you did your own spark plugs, did you make sure your gap was right on the new plugs and tested your coils?

3. have you checked your cats for flow? some places will have bench tests for these nasty little buggers that I hate with a passion. I plan on making my next toyota a 4.0 1uz-fe on propane. no more emissions lol

Personally I think making sure you pick your parts that you use to replace important items around the motor is a big deal. If you replace something in the system... reset the ecu to make sure the change you did is noticed.

I have 4 vehicles right now, the most recent is the 2003 4runner v6 and I am getting 10.7 L/100km on the highway and 12.5L/100km average (driving up and down mountains to go to work) converted to US mpg, 21.98 mpg on the highway and 18.81 mpg average. I drive like a human and this thing is bone stock.

my 1993 4runner v6 auto gets 14/17 L/100km, 1988 supra 7mgte gets 15/18 L/100km and my modified 1992 laser gets ..... I dont even want to say since it makes the toyota's look bad. lets just say... 2200 lbs and 260 hp..... idle on the highway lol

I will be putting E3 Spark Plugs E3.68 for a test run in this 4runner. along with high flow cats and brand new beck/arnley oxygen sensors front and back. if the cats fail the bench tests I am going to high flow aftermarket replacements with a 2 1/2 inch exhaust (friend has a mandral bender in his home shop)

ps. I am only posting this to help other new people understand that you can get great mileage out of these toy's if you put the right stuff in the cab and under the hood. hope this helps someone

:lookout::redbrick: :iagree:

Yea someone did total my 04 SR5....i now have a 06 limited which is getting much better mileage then the other one but now is starting to screw up a little bit....after i used seafoam.....??

As entertaining as it was, I skipped a few pages.

So the OP went out and got a new(er) 4 runner after *****ing about the poor mileage of the other one. It was getting better mileage and so he decided to treat the engine for some reason and now it's acting up. Hmm....

Anyhow...

I recently noted some hard shifting in my 04 with over 140K on it. I put in some transmission treatment that was supposed to help things out. It seems, although I don't have a lot of data to verify it that my mileage has increased a bit. I am routinely pulling in over 18mph. While I do have more hwy mileage now, it does seem that my mileage has improved even more since the transmission treatment. This is only my personal feeling based on what I remember about previous mileage. I didn't fill up today, but was at 313 miles with about 1/8 tank left.

I strongly believe the quality of gas has a huge effect on mileage. Living in a metropolitan area, I no longer have the option to buy none blended fuel. When I was able to go outside of the city limits to a country gas station, I could fill up with none blended fuel and notice a huge improvement in mileage and performance. Those days are gone, so I limit the urge to buy the cheapest crap at no name stations and buy quality gas from Shell or maybe my local Costco. Buying from the cheapest guy in town will only earn you a huge headache in the end. Blended gas is a ripoff scam and should be stopped.
