I wanna say zinc coating but I could be wrong :shrug:

Its 8.8 grade bolts with zinc yellow-chromate plating.

If we go away from the carriage bolt design we can get nicer looking bolts, but you're back to a two tool install, whereas now you only need the one wrench to install a crossbar.
 
Honestly its hit and miss. Some people report zero added noise, some people experience a wind noise, some a harmonic. We just added the bolt on faring option that will help out though, getting them back from powder coating today actually.

I went and looked at the aluminum faring on the site- does it work with the newer slotted crossbars? Seems it had spaced holes to fit the first style bars you guys did. Thanks!

Yeah, it will work. The one in the photos is mounted on our 4th Gen, and we used old stock hole style crossbars on it instead of taking up new stock slot crossbars. The holes and slots line up together though. The only crossbar the faring doesn't work on at the moment is the 10-13 Trails.

Do stainless versions of your current bolts not exist or are they costing crazy money? I know from trying to source some stainless stuff for myself it often is the latter issue.

That's probably why some companies charge another $20-$40 for the black bolt kits.

Seems to be they don't exist, at least with any of our suppliers. Literally the only finish we've been able to find is the one we're using.

If we go away from the carriage bolt, there are tons of options, but we really liked the one tool installation.

Can definitely see the advantage of one tool install, no argument there. Hopefully a stainless option will become available in the future.

If we ever get options working on our website, I could see offering both options for the bolts. The guy who is in charge of IT is off playing with his new prototype front bumper though :brick:

There are black zinc chromate coatings, which you might be able to have applied over the yellow chromate parts you're getting. I think chromate coatings can also be dyed (similar to dying anodized aluminum parts). Or you could epoxy electrocoat them. Might be easier to find a local plater to work on the parts you have now, rather than try to get custom hardware.

I like the carriage bolts, painting the bolt head was painless. I should've done that before I installed the roof rack.

Until recently we weren't getting enough of the hardware to justify a custom order. We're finally starting to go through enough though that we may be getting close.

We haven't had great luck dealing with the local platers in our company's other divisions. Seems to be a glaring hole locally for an honest plating company.

We have recently switched powder coating vendors though, and the first impressions from their batches are excellent.

lfd wide skid weight vs. two factory skids weight

Anyone know how much the wide skid weighs? Trying to determine the weight difference between it and the two factory skids that are removed
 
This is the only one I have at the moment. None of us even have one installed yet on ours, we cant keep them in stock long enough to claim one for ourselves...

Finally installed the wide front skid from these guys and love it!

Ordered a couple of aluminum crossbars, the wind deflector to hopefully cut down on wind noise, and a Hi Lift mount. If I like I'll probably order the Rotopax mounting plate as I don't have a metal rear bumper to put them on. I'm hoping I can mount the Hi Lift and some Maxtrax (or cheaper version) with only two bars. If not I guess I'll have to get another one. Occasionally I will put a Tule box on it as well for skis and snowboards.

One note, the website says that Toyota recommends 130 lbs max on stock roof rails and 300 lbs total on roof if you get the LFD Off-Road rails to replace stock. Seems like some are putting more weight than that on it. Haven't heard of any problems though. I think I will be able to stay under 130 lbs until I try and put a couple of Rotopax on there.
