The LFD Off Road Thread

We spray paint all skids and sliders that we're using ourselves.

If you're actually using them as skids and sliders, they are going to get scratched up no matter what coating you use. I drop my skids once or twice a year and give them a basic cleaning and re-coat.

I don't see any reason why a roll on paint wouldn't work as well either.

If you don't really plan to hit them on things, powder works well, but we just usually don't see the return on the cost with as often as we scratch them up.

We just got a batch of crossbars back from powder coating yesterday that we're shipping out now. The next batch is leaving for powder coating this afternoon and should be back early next week.

Issue is in colder climates that you cant re-paint when its cold out with out a fully heated workspace, and the road sand/gravel chips off paint very easily. For comparisons sake, my RCI front skid only showed direct hits (via offroading) but zero wear and tear from sand/gravel in the powdercoat. May be a completely different experience in warmer climates...

Skid plate question

I ordered a wide front skid on black friday. Since, I noticed that my factory skid was at an odd angle. I got underneath to find two bolts missing. Went to tighten another and it fell out leaving the skid hanging. I removed it and it appears the threading on the bolts was toast. I'm hoping it is that and not the nut. I haven't looked much closer since it happened. All that to ask... Do the skids ship with bolts to mount or is it intended to be bolted up with the factory bolts. Just curious if I need to grab some from somewhere prior to the skid plates arrival.

Thanks!

Finally got around to installing my LFD Hybrid Front Bumper this week. Now I need to go hit some trails!!!

We ship them with new bolts, so hopefully it was just your old bolts and not the weld nuts.

Awesome! Thank you. I plan to look at it closer tonight. Not real sure where it happened, but glad it didn't fall off on the interstate. Any idea of when those may ship out?

We just finished up a huge batch of skids today, so we'll start packing them up next week. We're going to be incredibly short handed with everyone traveling for the holidays though so I don't know how much will actually get packed next week.

Took a closer look last night. Weld nuts are toast. One of them still has the post of the bolt in it. Thinking my friendly Toyota service department destroyed those for me.

Stripped Skid Plate Bolt - got it

Nice weather today, so I decided to prepare for the skid plates I ordered.
I was able to get everything off except for 1 bolt on the front skid plate.
Drivers side - rear bolt - see confusing picture below.

I tried a socket type bolt remover from Lowe's and the bolt just seemed to round off more.
I tried the left handed Screw Remover and the hardened bolt just laughed at me.

I guess I don't care about the bolt - but I need the weld nut don't I?
I can't just cut it off right?
I have a angle grinder, but I've only used that for small stock projects.
Not sure about laying underneath the car and trying to cut off a skid plate.

Do I go to the shop and have them do whatever they do.. maybe weld a nut onto it so they can get a grip?
Any thoughts from the more experienced?

Update:
Got it... think I was too impatient.
Not sure which method made the difference because I tried them all.
Cleaned area.
Blow torch - let cool.
Struck with a cold chisel at a 45 degree angle.
Doused with PB Blaster... waited.
And found a 12mm bolt extractor socket at Harbor Freight.
The ones I was using were combo SAE/metric... thinking they were close but not tight enough.
Took several tries to get the extractor to bite, but once it did it was on good (actually was hard to get back off).
Then all it took was some brute force
