The Mid Travel Thread

Rears are 10.5" stroke. I need to call King and find out what valving is in them and I might adjust that, might leave it depending. These obviously won't bolt into the stock location because they don't have the right top. But that is ok, I am gunna fab up some shock mounts to go outside the frame rails to mount these. A few people are having good success with mounting the rear shocks on the outside the frame so I am excited to get those mounted. Along with a rebuild and maybe re-valving I also plan on adding some hydro bumps to accompany the rear shocks. They will be built into the shock mounts. Probably going to be a couple months until I get fabbing and mounting...

Are those 2.0 shocks in the rear?

only thing i have right now it stock length Kings with 14-650-3.0 springs and love the ride upfront. that 2.5" shock helps a ton.

Rears are Supe flex and parts store land cruiser shocks. i can feel the rear bounces more than the front over quicker bumps.

a while back i found some kings like that that were off a tacoma that had the 6" drop bracket lift for cheep. i was thinking about picking them up and wanted to swap the extended length into mine and get rid of the stock length ones.

So guys... convince me need some sort of UCA. id like to ride in a truck and see if they are worth it. does it ride any better or does it mainly just help with drooping the tire?

So your standard travel Kings can be turned into extended travel for no extra money. Open them up (videos online for how to), there is a 1/2" spacer in the shock that limits the travel, you take that out, put them back together and bammmm, extended travel!

The benefit of the extended travel has nothing to do with ride quality really. What it does do is let your front wheel drop down another 3/4" or so which is some offroad situations will allow you to keep that tire on the ground providing traction. It is a small amount, but it does help.

Man that's gonna be a tight fit with those 2.5s in the rear. My 2.0s are close. I hope you get them to fit. I'll deff keep an eye out on how you get it done.

interesting. I'll be watching that for sure. I was under the impression that a 2.5 body wont fit between the frame and the tire unless you have massively backspaced wheels

I could have sworn I saw a build where someone ran 2.5" shocks? Oh well, I will see if they fit and go from there. My wheels have some additional back spacing so it is as if I am running a 1.25" wheel spacer. If there isn't enough room then I will just build some custom shock mounts inside the frame. There are a few options and I think I will be able to get them on. If not I can sell them to a Tacoma guy and then get the 4runner ones, haha.

I just went outside and held them in the area they will be mounted. They seem to fit fine with at least 1.5" clearance between the tire and the shock... Not sure how much the tire flexes in when it is articulated. I will have to really play with it.

This has got me so excited. I had no idea so much extra performance could be squeezed out of the stock geometry. It's renewed my love for 3rd gens all over again.

At this point, I'm debating between copying and pasting Patio Burrito's setup or just running King's "OEM performance" 2.5's all around. My thoughts for copying PB's setup is if I'm making the leap I may as well get the whole enchilada (pun intended) but I imagine his setup will run 1.5x the cost of the "OEM Performance" setup.

What are everyone's thoughts? Copy PB's setup or settle for the OEM setup? Also, does KING take forever to respond to emails or is it just me? I emailed them three days ago asking for advice and still haven't heard back. Do they prefer to use the phone?

I wouldn't add a second front shock until you run it for a while. It's a lot of coin ( the secondary total chaos shock hoops are 750, king air bumps are 500+) and you may not even need it depending on how you drive. Not saying it wouldn't be badass, I would just go one step at a time.

King was really good with me when I was rebuilding mine. I called and emailed both and got replies quickly. I will say their phone support is killer though

Patio has OEM replacements and added to the set up. Fronts are extended travel OEMs. Rears are OEMs with the added compression adjustment valve. You can get all of these from Down South Motorsports. Then he added off the shelf bypasses with Total Chaos 2nd shock mounting kit and Hydro bumps in the rear. You can buy it all at once or a few parts at a time!

Oh ya, and call them. Great phone support, they always answer my weird questions. Everyone wants to email or rant on a forum but the best way is still the old school way of simply having a conversation with a person. No jab at you, speaking in general from what I see on the various forums.

Running a secondary shock up front, I think personally, is a complete waste. In stock geometry, the rear will never be able to keep up even close.

Evolved overtime but now complete

Great info man, thanks! As a realtor, I spend far too much of my day on the phone so I'm looking forward to speaking with them tomorrow!

Mojave, are these the ones I want for the front? I guess I'm not seeing the "Extended travel" option. Thanks! OEM Fronts

ok so guys, once again i need your help. last summer i took my C.O. apart cleaned, painted my springs and clear coated my shafts after i adjusted them to they height i wanted them at to protect the threaded part.

well that didnt last long. a couple months later (just starting to get into winter, not even in it) it was looking like crap... :hurt:

so im thinking about taking them apart again and wanted to figure something out how i can make them last longer without looking like crap.

i need to work on taking better car of them.

WD40. I get down there with the bottle and the larger nozzle and blast them. I try to before a storm up here. Only done it a couple of times but it's worked. I can barely tell they are dirty even after driving through slush

Those are them. They come in extended and standard travel but for some reason I don't see them listed that way on some websites... I would call DSM to place your order. They are very smart over there. I just worked with Neil over there to get my coils and shafts and he was a great help!

Man for a second there I though you really clear coated your shafts, then I realized you were talking about your shock bodies when you mentioned threads.

So you can't paint these things because the coils move a lot more than you think and will mess that all up. Like mentioned above a little WD will help before a storm or something. But that stuff will get caked with dirt which will then get on your shafts and may damage seals... So be careful with that and how much you out on there.

The best answer is just you need to keep them clean. They are corrosion resistant so spray them down with water often to wash off any debre. They key is to do it right when you get home from a day of wheeling before the stuff gets a chance to bake on there. These Coilovers along with UCAs just require a little bit of attention with cleaning and lubrication. But if you stay on it they will always work great!

Wow those things are beat up. Depending on how DIY you are you can actually replace the shock bodies if they are that damaged. It would probably cost more to get them re-coated than to just replace them. Shock bodies should be around $65 each, and you can find you tube videos that will show you how to disassemble the shock.

Or you can send them to King and have them fix them for you. If the bodies do not need to be replaced I know King charges $120 a shock to disassemble, clean, put in new seals and oil and polish the shock shafts. All of which again you can do yourself with a little effort.

After you get them cleaned up you need to google image search for coilover shock coil covers. There are many different ones out there, but they basically cover up the shock to protect it from the elements. This is not the end all though. You will still need to take the bags off 4-6 times a year to make sure it isn't full of stuff and clean if needed.

Yeah I told u guys.

Yeah they don't leak nor have ever had any problems with them over the close to 50k miles I've put on them and buying them used with 30k years ago.

Yeah they put those bags on dirt bike shocks and atvs that I'm used to.

I am very mechanical and these do not scare me at all. I've rebuilt my dirt bike shock a few times and it's basically the same.

So have you guys seen king added 96-02 4Runner to their oem replacement shocks that are a 1/2 shorter than the Tacoma version? Why would that be? Why not use the same product? I have the Tacoma version.

Also where do you get your rebuild kits? Like seals wear bands and oil?
