The Mid Travel Thread

No dual shocks, but air bumps are a definite possibility. I am still piecing the setup together, but I am leaning towards superflex coils and 12" shock in the rear.

Does anyone have experience with Walker Evans? Their prices are in between FOA and King/Icon

Check out ADS Racing Shocks.

Does FOA make OEM replacements I don't know about? If not you can probably make a 6" or 8" travel shock work. After I get into all the shocks on my bench I'll share some collapsed and extended lengths.

They make some OEM replacements but not for any Toyotas that I know of...

Hay everyone, so I plan on running the King OEM setup in the front and rear. And pair the rear with Toytec/Eibach 3" lift coils. Does anyone know the length measurements for the rear shock to give to King? I'm trying to avoid a lengthy break in period just to find the correct rear shock measurements.

Cool, not too old thread here.

So if I was considering running King coilovers and LR UCAs up front, what would be some different options out back that don't involve shock relocation?

I have noticed that quite a few builds that run a 2.5 rear shock end up having to relocate where it connects to the frame.

Partly due to cost, and partly due to ease of installation, I was considering a few different options that don't involve fab work.

1. King SPC LR up front with Sanoran Steel 1.2 rear lift

2. King SPC LR up front with Superflex springs (?? shocks)

3. Something else...

Do any of you run your Kings or Icon (extended) with SPC Light Racing UCAs? Would the 1" extra downward travel be an issue with the SPCs?

I would like my set up to be enjoyable to drive on and off road as it is my DD and WA. roads suck sometimes. I am only running 265/75/16s atm, so I am not sure if a LC based rear will be goofy high with those size tires. I see some pics with a similar set up and it looks fine, while others seem WAY jacked up in the air. I know there are different wrap options, 7-9, but I don't think I would need that much lift.

I ran Icon extended travel w/ SPC Light Racing UCAs for a year or two without any issues.

The biggest issue out back is and always will be weight. I despise how much my rear is lifted, but the OME 861 spring is the only one I can find that will hold the weight I have back there without sagging. In a perfect world where my rear weighed the same as stock I'd run an OME 890 back there, or 891 if I was feeling like I may need a little more weight carrying capacity. I think any LC spring will be too tall with the 265, but maybe you wouldn't mind it.

For a rear shock, you want to keep the same valving as you have in the front. If you mix and match the valving it just feels weird. Since you have King coilovers, you'll want a progressive shock in the rear too. King or Fox would be my first choices but the Tokico LC shocks would probably be fine. I am unsure on the valving of those, however. People run those land cruiser shocks in the factory location. I think those are like 23.5" extended and 14.5" compressed if I remember correctly.

I read my post and it's hard to follow... Hopefully you can decipher it. Bed time.

**edit** I just noticed that the picture of springs/coilovers is in the post above yours. If you've not purchased the goods yet, hit up TotalAutomotiveLV and prepare to have your mind blown at the price they can offer you on an Icon Stage 2 (Coilovers, UCAs, and rear shocks) or similar setup from other manufacturers. I'd still be running my Light Racing UCAs had it not been for the stupid deal they gave me on Icon UCAs.

For mid travel, there needs to be a 1.5" or 2" extended lower control arm kit. So you would increase trac by 3" or 4". The 3.5" kit is too much for me. But a slight increase would be cool, would have the benefit of more travel, and would also provide more stability on road. Who wants to build a mid travel lower a arm kit??

Wow, been out for a while. May be moving back into a 4Runner soon (Taco was stolen last week). Super stoked to see this thread cruising right along!!!

Anybody actually have any travel numbers for their setups? A lot of these are looking really good and I'm sure they perform much better than 5100's with Toytec/Eibach coils (which is what I am currently running, and they kinda suck) but I'm wondering if any of these setups are actually "mid travel". I'm interested to see how much more travel they have than a standard lift. I really need to do something up front to keep up with my rear suspension.
In the rear I am just about 12" of vertical travel. Never measured the numbers of articulation though.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been working a ton of overtime and working on very little sleep.

I have been checking everything out and have gotten some pricing from a few places including Total Automotive and also the current group buy thread offer.

Right now I am mainly considering how far down the rabbit hole in want to go as far as money. lol. I know I want a decent coilover up front, and there are plenty of good options. I am considering Boss, Icon, and King. There are pretty good deals running now for Icon and King. But for the rear, I had been considering just running a tried and true SS 1.2 rear lift. I like that it has a lot of options I want anyway. I like and have heard good things about their panhard bars, extended bumpstops and linkage they offer in their kit. And the 7 wraps and Tokico shocks are what they are. I know they offer a fair amount of lift and articulation. I have heard that while they don't shine in their weight carrying capacity, it sort of evens out with the extra height offered. So this is one moderate price point.

If I were to go with a full Icon or King set, then I would be stepping up quite a bit. Can you safely run 2.5 shocks out back without relocating them? From what I have gleamed from reading threads, moving their mounts is done to enhance performance. I just wanted to know if running them in the standard location would be a big deal. Depending on how overboard I decide to go, I could even go with rear 2.5 piggybackshocks with adjustable dampening.

As far as what I want to do offroad, I don't really see myself driving fast too much. I want to explore and do some camping / overlanding and what not. I just wonder if going with the upper tier suspension is going overboard for my needs.

How much are they different at slower speeds?

Anybody run a nice coilover up front with a SS 1.2 rear?

I have no experience with the LC shocks or coils in the rear, so I cannot really comment. I IMAGINE they'd do OK.

You can run 2.5" shocks in the stock location without issues. I ran the Icon w/ the piggyback reservoirs for over a year in the factory spots without issues. GSPRunner is running Radflo 2.5" shocks in the factory location as well. It can be done.

At lower speeds an Icon setup will be pretty rough, but with the CDC Valves you can soften up the dampening considerably. The last run I did I didn't even air down when the rest of the group did. I was lazy and just turned my knobs, then sat in my nice air conditioned 4Runner =p.

There are a ton of options man... You could even look at the 2" icon/king/fox offerings for the rear. If you're not trying to win any races you don't really need that extra fluid the 2.5" options get you.

I don't have much to say about the Sonoran panhard bar but I will say this... GSPRunner has one and his gas tank skid is all banged up from his driveline hitting it. I have a panhard drop from Toytec and no such damage on my gas tank skid.

Right on. Would you say that Kings are smoother at the slow speed compared to the Icons. I know you have the Icons, but have you had an opportunity to ride in a runner equipped with Kings?

The only 3rd gen I have ridden in w/ kings is lifted way too much in the front so it's pretty stiff. I've been in a couple 2nd gen tacomas with kings though and they're quite a bit softer going slow.
