The Next Project.....

Well,

It has time for the next project. I think some of you might be really surprised and others not so much at all since we love car and trucks. Up next is going to be a 03-06 E55 MBZ (W211). I have longed for this car for a very long time, pretty much since they have come out. Now that I'm older and have a little more time to really read up on them and maybe start looking for one. Do any of you guys or gals own one or have owned one? If so what is the good bad and the ugly?

The bad? It's an early to mid 2000's Mercedes Benz.

With that said, if you have really wanted it then you will look past the spotty quality and reliability of that era. Still a good car as long as you expect the costs to have it.

My uncle the attorney had one. Great car when new but it became an electronics semi nightmare beginning three years ago. The speedo cluster wouldn't read correctly, lights would stay on, no connectivity to the OBDII port. The driveline was still in fantastic shape.

If you get one make sure to have a Power Probe on hand to aid in chasing down those electrical gremlins. And a heavy wallet.

I've owned several MB's. Not that particular model.

The bad? There are lots of things that can go wrong. Either you own it while under warranty, or have the ability to fix it yourself, or be ready to pay the high service/repair costs that you will be charged. The engines are usually very durable though.

BMW's are about the same as far as maintenance, repair, and durability are concerned. BMW's are usually more of a drivers car, just from the perspective of how the vehicle feels and responds.

A buddy of mine bought a then-new '06 CLS55 AMG brand new and put ~80K miles on it. I think the only major repair he fessed up to having done on it was a leaky rear main seal. He LOVED the car and sometimes regrets selling it.

Just this morning I was on the freeway and got passed up by a new E63 AMG wagon, aka "The Unicorn". I would LOVE one of those!

Had a M3, M5 and a 55AMG. All very fun to drive but the practicality of actually having something you could drive on a daily basis was nice. Repairs were horrendous though. Going into it thinking "it wont be so bad" is moronic. If you have the dough to do it and you've always wanted to do it then go for it. Small items that need to be fixed need to be fixed immediately because of the snowball effect. They're not like our Runners which can be held together for miles and years with a simple bandaid fix although I know the majority of us take care of our Runners anyway.

I have been reading up on the issues of this car. I was looking at the M5 also and a M3 etc etc. I just keep coming back to this car because of the low end grunt of the 5.5L V8. I was looking at the Weistec Packages for this car and was also going to call them for some of the fixes to the issues and also about upgrades etc. As for repairs- I'm not worried about it. I work in a shop all day long and my Master Tech is a BMW Benz guy so no issues there. He is my go to guy for all the basket cases we get anyhow. That and my price on his labor is cheap because I'm not paying full boat labor rates at over 100 an hour like most people that take them to Benz or a good independent shop. So that is were I'm at with this deal.
