Come on. We all know Toyota has a 6-speed that they can drop into the 5th gen, and it won't have that issue. Using Ford recalls to twist the shortcomings of the 5th gen ain't working.

I agree with the OP. The old tech 5spd is rock solid. Honda, Land Rover, and FCA have problems with the ZF 9spd. Someones 8spd also has problems. I prefer a non gated transmission shifter. However, gated transmission are solidly in or out of gear. No guessing.

Personally speaking, Toyota's 5-speed automatic isn't a 'shortcoming'. It does just fine for me. And from all I've read here and elsewhere, the unit just doesn't break.

I'm reading the recall now that we get from the blue oval, to Fords credit,
the recall is just a software update and not a hardware issue...

They make a 6-speed that does more than "just fine". From a comparative standpoint, it's a shortcoming. Personal opinions do not matter, there's plenty of people who would readily accept a single shortcoming for a better overall vehicle(myself included). That said, they can do better. Just because you spent all your gosh darn hard earned money on it doesn't mean it's perfect.

From a comparative standpoint, the 4Runner is a basketful of shortcomings - especially if you read a lot of the posts here. The list of complaints is amazing to me. Toyota could do better on just about every aspect of it.

I didn’t spend my hard-earned money on it because I think it’s perfect. But I do believe it’s the best overall vehicle like it that’s available. Sure, it only has a 5-speed transmission. It may also be the most durable transmission available on such a vehicle. For me personally, that is “just fine”. And even if I wanted 6, or 8, or 10 speeds, when I bought it, it had 5. For me to gripe about that after the fact wouldn’t make sense.
