The REAL Gas Cap Question

Really need some clarity on this for my 2001 2wd v6 T4R:

Should the gas cap for my vehicle be of the vacuum design, or the vented design? I see the one I bought at Advance (not autozone) was the Stant/vacuum only design, and the one they sell at Autozone is the CST cap, which is of the vented design, not vacuum.

Which one is correct?

I more/less answered this in your other thread, but here is straight from my ALLDATADIY online manual. The emboldened implies it is a vacuum (or non-vented) design. That being said, why not just get a factory Toyota cap and be done with it? They are only about $16:


CHECK AIR TIGHTNESS IN FUEL TANK AND FILLER PIPE

Disconnect the EVAP line hose from the charcoal canister side and then pressurize and make the internal pressure in the fuel tank 4 kPa (41 gf/sq.cm, 0.58 psi) .
Check that the internal pressure of the fuel tank can be hold for 1 minute .
Check the connected portions of each hose and pipe.
Check the installed parts on the fuel tank. If there is no abnormality, replace the fuel tank and filler pipe.
Reconnect the EVAP line hose to the charcoal canister.

understood - you weren't actually 100 sure.....but, I think you are right...read a couple of other threads today, and I am thinking now that the problem may be that I am over-tightening the cap. The Stant cap is a one-click design. I've been doing 5-7 clicks....since I loosened it up yesterday, not smelling the gas any more...the real test will be tomorrow when I get back in the stop and go mess.

My '97 owners manual states that the Toyota cap is intended to hold a vacuum, and to allow air into the gas tank under certain conditions.
That said, why not get the Toyota cap and be done with it for another ten years or more?
