the Rescue Runner build thread

so i got my "new" rear shocks, and some new firestone airbags for the rear of my 4runner, hopefully gonna be installing these this weekend and getting a normal ride back.

Are you still sagging with the new springs? That's cray cray. I ended up settling exactly even with all my work gear in there but that's without swing, spare, etc. They prol settled a good inch +. Fingers crossed for how long that lasts but for now it's spot on. If I swap work gear for swing, spare and a ill gear I have easily an inch of rake. I didn't think you'd be trying to bring saggin back to the couve.

Its just a little too soft, maybe its because my shocks are blown, but sense I'm gonna have it all apart I'm gonna put in new airbags for long trips and towing... When I load up with the family and dog and all our gear it sags...

Well my bonus finally came through, you know what that means... Yeup gears and lockers! Nitro 4:88s and ARB(s) -depending on the cost of the lockers, I also might be upgrading the compressor to the larger one. Can't wait.

In other news the ride is now back to what I expected. Very stable and reassuring. They 861s with the bumper feel like the 8wraps did without the bumper. I'm very happy.

I realize this is way too general of a question but you going to 4.88 strikes a chord with me. I've been saving for the front ARB locker as well but if I'm going through the trouble of getting the diff out....I wouldn't mind 4.88's to bring the pep back. How tough is swapping gears? Can the weekend wrench monkey do it, or should I pay a shop? Obviously I'd have to do the rear as well with e-locker.
I just know your rig looks killer with 305's so that or 315's are my goal. Assuming I don't have to swap out a ton of other parts like UCA's....

If your asking how hard it is to regear, take it to a shop... The front diff is harder to set up than the rear, and if your new to doing gears I'd suggest not trying... It could and probably will cost you lots of money( fixing mistakes and broken parts as a result). I have set up gears once and watched it dome several times... I have never done a front and am kinda sketched about trying. I might end up paying a shop depending on cost and my mood that day. So i think it would save you time and money. But honestly I'd say just do gears. Unless you wheel hard core there is no reason to lock the front, and you will see more benefits from the regear than you will with the locker, especially sense you already a rear locker. When I had my rear locker I could go any place I wanted to. It was night and day difference and I never found myself actually needing a front locker. Would it have been nice? Yes, but not required. Driver skill can overcome most of all but the hardest trails and lines. And at that point its a toss up for doing a SAS at that point

I just scored a 4.88 Elocker rear end that a buddy is going to pick up for me. Ive been a little worried about how deep the gears are but since we are both running 34s, I am glad to see you going with them also.

That should put you just a slight bit lower than stock, but I doubt it would even be noticeable. As I could not tell the difference between 4:10s and 4:30s... And if your anything like me and I feel you would be, I'd rather be lower geared than higher geared if I had to pick one or the other...

Congrats on the score!

Once you are fully locked with the 4.88's we may need you to throw on some Lotus Development CV's and head for Sand Lake. You seem to be a great product tester!
Too bad you can't make McGrew this year - it would be nice to see that runner in action.

OK now I know where your from... Lol over on gitout I have been seeing your runner, and thinking man it looks familiar when I see it here. And when you just said something about the McGrew run it hit me. -are you going to the BBQ meet and greet next weekend?

Yeah about sand lake, no thanks I don't like sand lake... That place is the reason I blew my first rear end, that and I'm still finding sand in my runner... I hate the sand! Maybe it has something to do with Iraq idk but yeah sand sucks. But I would love me some nice lotus axles as well as some LR UCAs. I think after gears and lockers I'm gonna go and try the manual hub conversion.

I'm missing the gitout BBQ for a houseboat trip to Billy Chinook. Tough decision but skiing, fishing, and beer won out.

I've heard that you couldn't go larger than a 285/70 without having the adjustable UCA - yet you run 305's?
Since you talked me out of a front locker...and it sounds like I won't find much difference going from a 4.56 to a 4.88 I think I'll spend my money on a body lift and UCA's to make room for bigger tires (maybe even 315). 315's I suppose I'd need to start looking at 5.29's.
You are running 305's with no BL, but you do have the adjustable Bils up front and what for coils? I see the TRD SC in your sig - are you 4.56 and s/c'ed as well?

Sheesh - I don't think I ask enough questions per post. By the time I first get to shake your hand I'll owe you thousands in consulting fees.

That sucks about the BBQ, but sounds like your gonna have just as much fun and possibly more.

Yeah people said I couldn't run 285s stock, but I did and showed its very doable. I can run the 305s because of the wheels I have and their offset along with the spacers I have (1.25" ) . I am completely stock as far as gearing goes... 4:10s and open. I still want my hwy driveability so I'm not going to 5:29s. I think a body lift would be a good idea even with the 305s, as I even rub on the firewall on moderate flex -thankfully that only happens as slow speeds. If you want to go to true 35s/315s you should do a body lift, UCAs, and 5:29s...

My front coils are the ToyTec eibach 3" lift coils on the first setting of the tundra bilstiens. Funny you should mention a SC... I am looking at one currently for sale in Seattle. But its more than I want to spend. The SC is a future mod for down the road.

Well if you decide to SC I might be able to repay some of my debt to you. I have spent way too much time building mine, re-building mine, and then chasing the weakest link through the drive-train. Sure makes for a kick in the pants ride though.
Sounds like I should just stick to a 305 with BL and keep the darn OEM 4.56's that have been flawless for 156K. Thanks for saving me from myself.

I will have to keep an eye on the gitout events and make sure I attend one of your runs. It would be nice to put a face to the avatar.

I don't know if I'd stay at 4:56... 4:88 is gonna be a sweet spot for the larger tires. Sure you have the SC, but if you keep the taller gears that's gonna stress the transmission more and wear it faster. Just my thoughts

Nice build, guess after lurking on T4R.org for months I am finally jumping in with comments for some of the best looking rigs.... good work, very tasteful!
