the Rescue Runner build thread

Probably 4.56 would give you the best of all aspects. Of course if you could find a 4.30 front diff I have a good 4.30 rear I'd sell you dirt cheap ie cost of shipping. But if you could find a 4.30 elocker that would be best. If your gonna go new its worth it to get a locker with the gears from ECGS.

question

I'm certain you've mentioned this before but what camera are you using for your photos? Also, what program if any? the shot of your dog in front of the fire is very impressive.

PS: kick a$$ build you've managed to piece together.

Thanks for the intel. I've got some research to do...

welp i called the shop today, to inquire about my diffs and when they would be ready as i had not heard from them yet -took them in two weeks ago and they told me a week to week and a half... they told me i should have them by the end of the week. so yeah great news for me, im gonna try to swap out the front one sat morning, and then go to the easy rear. wish me luck, hopefully this goes better than my "planned" instal did.

just ordered a set of med hiflow RunCool hood louvers URBAN ASSAULT, we will be twins now.... ok not really but yeah

Gonna be so nice to get these in...

did you ever get that elec fan installed yet?
My driving is a lot of town driving as well and my temps are steady at 189*-192*

Are you seeing the same type of numbers? What is your end goal for engine temps?
I wouldn't mind better mpgs in town and wondering if this is the way to go.

Yeah I got it all installed. It was kind of a nightmare for a couple of days... One fan was pulling and the other was pushing. It took me some time to figure it out because I wired it just like the instructions said to and showed... Turns out flexilite miswired the fans in the first place so I had to fix their mistakes and then it worked good. Also am currently running a 170* thermostat and with that I see temps anywhere from 180-220 depending on the day and outside temps and how I'm driving/where I'm driving. Around town I'm closer to 190-200 out on the open fwy it can drop down to about 180 if I keep a good pace and have no load. And if I'm out on forest service roads say climbing a grade I can see temps start to rise into the 220+ range. So yeah I'll be installing some hood louvers and that combined with the new gears I should be good and be able to keep temps more around the 180-200 range. Honestly the hood louvers are more for lowering intake temps and just general under hood temps and less stress on parts -heat = stress.

You have to consider that I push around more weight than most people on the forum - 35" tires, full armor ect and only running 4.10 gears currently its taxing on the entire power train system. So I probably generate more heat that most of you, so the flexilite fans have their work cut out for them. But they seam to be doing a good job with what I'm giving them to work with. Also airflow to the radiator is hampered by my trans coolers (both of them cover the entire exposed portion of the AC condenser) and my lights as well as the winch control box. I plan to relocate that box to behind the bumper at some point soon.

Oh okay nice, good to know. I guess I don't really "need" to the fans, due to seeing lower avg temps.. I hardly hit anything over 200, although I do agree on intake temps being high.
I definitely feel the difference between driving at night and during the day in hot summer days.
I am seeing intake temps upwards of 110-130 during the day which is way to high in my opinion.
At night it avgs around 80-90.

The louvers seem like quite a bit of commitment for lower engine bay temps, any worries about dirt/mud/rain coming inwards?

I have been looking more into a snorkel not mainly for its function but for lower intake temps, since you have one do you happen to know if that helps with "colder" air intake?

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks in advance

Given your past experiences, are you trying to stop a bullet? Cuz it might work... :)

A snorkel is for cleaner air... Like if you spend a lot of time on back roads or dusty roads where your tires or other vehicles kick up a lot of dust all the time. Sure a snorkel will pull the coldest possible air, as its pulling air from completely outside the vehicle, but its not gonna make that much of a difference IMO. I can still see intake temps like yours in traffic or around town on hot days. And let's be honest both mods will require you to cut into the vehicle. I personally think the hood louvers will do more and for much less. The only reason I got my snorkel was I got a killer deal on it, and could not pass it up. But spending almost $450 on one, nope not worth it IMO for the cooler look and lower intake temps(of maybe 2 or 3*).
I talked to another guy on here URBAN ASSAULT about his hood louvers and asked about the same worries of water and other debris ect, and he had no complaints or fears and they have been working for him just fine.

Well I was lazy today... Im sure working 14+ hrs yesterday and not getting home till after midnight didn't have anything to do with that either lol, so I only managed to get the rear diff swapped. But tomorrow I'm going over to a friends house and we are gonna tackle the front. After that its just a matter of putting miles on it this week and coming weekend and then wheeling the 9-10 to see how things do and once again on the 16th

So even on the ride over to your friends was the drive with the 4.88's in the rear night and day difference? Can't wait to hear the whole report.

Well the drive into work today was a little different... I kept expecting the runner to up shift. Its funny because yeah I'm not in the rpm range I thought I would be... I figured at about 70mph I'd be about 2800-3000, but I'm only at 2500... I guess that's a good thing for fwy. It is definitely noticeable, acceleration is much easier and a little touchier... But it's good, climbing hills are easier and I can actually accelerate up hills. The locker took some time to break in and get operating smoothly but that's to be expected - used a dirt and gravel parking lot to do this.

Got the front in last night... Its a process, but now I know how to do one... It took twice as long to get it out lol. Tonight I'm gonna be plumbing the lines and getting things finalized

Unfortunately putting the front one back in is just as bad. I've never sworn at my truck more then working on the front diff.
Your rig should dominate the trails now! What's the next project on the list?

For me putting it back in took about half as long and that included eating. Next idk. I know I'm upgrading my compressor to the ARB twin. Honestly its probably gonna be beefing up the rear end links and LR UCA.

welp having some issues with the lockers, or rather compressor, so the lockers are down for the time being. ARB is taking care of it though, so hopefully only a week down. its really no biggie because with the new gears i probably should not be using the lockers till they are fully broken-in...

You going twin tankless now, or adding a tank? Nice to hear ARB stands behind their product though.
