The Strawberry MilkShake Tranny Rebuild?

Guys,

I am totally lost. I have a 99' Limited that had the MilkShake hit it about 7-8 months ago. I thought I was lucky in that no coolant went back to the Tranny. Well, about 2 weeks ago my CEL came on. Turns out I am having problems with the Torque Converter. Periodically the Tranny will not go into reverse after it is warmed up. Took it to my regular shop and sure enough I have Debris in the Pan.

So here I sit with the question. Do I go ahead and rebuild the tranny or trade the truck in? Do you think this is a good price?

I was quoted $1850 for a full rebuild plus adding an aftermarket cooler. 1 Yr Warranty. Only non-performing parts will be replaced.

I have done a fair amount of repairs to the truck in the past 2 years, so I kind of want to keep it: Timing Belt; Water Pump; Starter; Radiator;

What do you guys think? If you are in the Dallas area and have a good Tranny specialist...I am all ears.

No specialist, but the TC is sealed. It will not be contaminated by the milkshake fluid.

How many miles on the fluid?

Thanks for the response. The fluid has been flushed multiple times. And I would say less than 10K miles. It is dirty, which leads me to believe that things are not right in there.


I guess if I am going to head down the re-build route, I was just curious if te price I was quoted was a good price.

Any idea what a used transmission would cost?

I don't think the TC cares which way you are going, forward or reverse. If it works fine one way it's good. Sounds more like a solenoid problem. You might want to get a second opinion before spending that much dough.

Get a used low cost tranny instead.

My normal mechanic does not do Trans repairs. He gave me 2 shops to call. 1 shop said they would open up the pan and take a look before hitting me with the cost. They were about $1950 for the service with tax and adding a tranny cooler.

The other shop I called quoted me approx 1850 for roughly the same thing except, they just want to rebuild it...no inspection 1st.

I have found on CL a rebuilt tranny at a shop about 30 miles away. They will put it in for 1350 or I can buy it outright for $350. I really don't have the tools to tackle this and plus my truck is from Maine thus there will be some corrrosion and would probably be a major PITA to change out.

You guys mentioned getting a used tranny, would you suggest I hit junk yards or just ask my mechanic to look up junk yards? I am just not sure where else to locate one other than on here or YotaTech or CL or Ebay.

I must say though that I did not say before. When I got the truck originally the truck would come out of gear if I braked too hard for a stop light and of course for a while it has shifted pretty hard. Gonna hit an AutoZone today to get the Exact CEL code and then will be back on with what I find.

Alright, I hit Auto Zone and got the magical codes:

P0770 - Shift Solenoid "E" Malfunction this one was on there 2 times.-SSV DSL
P0773 - Shift Solenoid "E" electrical malfunction - SSV DSL

Both of these codes were for Lexus, but I would imagine they should be the same.

So maybe the whole thing does not need to be rebuilt. Anyone ever messed with the solenoids? Will I have to drop the tranny to check it out?

Update!! and a question

So. My pink Milkshake occurred in October of 2010. Almost a year later, the tranny cried Uncle.

So far I have had the tranny rebuilt and the solenoids replaced. The issue I am having now is that the freaking CEL keeps coming back on pointing to the solenoids. B & E. My "new" mechanic replaced all 3 and again the light is back on.

So my question comes to this. Besides the solenoid. I would assume the valve bodies could cause the CEL to point to the solenoid, but what other electical issues could cause this? Anyone ever hear about an electical problem that would cause this? Would | Should this lead to new electrical wiring for the tranny?
