The Turbo Rock Lobster

Just testing out the crawler. I used to have to slip the clutch and work the gas like a mofo to get up to the top. This time, i didn't touch the gas or the clutch.

Absolutely mesmerizing seeing trucks with crawl boxes in action. I really hope you make it to Moab in may if you're not busy, I HAVE to see this thing in person. :thumb3:

Elocker swaps are super simple, especially for a guy like you. I recommend making your own wiring, it took no time at all! A switch and an LED and that was it.

AWESOME look with the new wheels and SICK job on the dual cases...my buddy has one in his first gen and in double-low, first gear he can two-foot the brake and not stall the truck out

will that case work with the 5VZ and T-100 tranny, do you know?

SICK Dylan!!! I like in the 2nd vid how you point at the rock like "yeah, your about to be owned by my crawlbox with zero throttle input...boom." haha

Wow, I want one of these. PS - how are the stock gears with the 35's? I know your s/c'd but...

I had never driven a vehicle with dual cases until today. This is fricken cool Dylan. I never thought it could be so cool to drive that slow! Can't wait to see it on the trail.

Yep i'm planning on being there! Hopefully the elocker will be in by then too.

It is pretty crazy to just idle over everything. You'll have to try it out!

Thanks Bryan!! Yeah you should be able to install the same thing in your rig. Basically its a gear drive tcase with 2 adapters all bolted together. The front adapter allows you to bolt up the geared case behind the 3rd gen trans. The rear adapter mates the geared case to the stock chain case.

For sure! Its pretty nuts just being able to basically sit back and watch it do its thing.

Honestly, i don't think there was a big of a jump going to 35's from 33's compared to 33's from stock. The SC definitely helps. If i didn't have that, i would definitely consider regearing. Right now though, i doubt i will ever regear past 4.30 since the gears get considerably weaker with 4.88's or 5.29's

Haha. Now you just need to drive it somewhere other than the parking lot at work!

Nice Job!, I've been reading around on doing duals and I've read that going witht the 4.7 upfront is 'not recommended' due to added stress on other drivetrain parts. But I see that you and J-Money have both gone with the 4.7 upfront. Is this becuase you guys are both 5sp and that's stronger than the auto? (I have the auto is why I'm asking)

Thanks

Thanks Mike!

Its not so much auto vs manual. Since the transmission is in front of the t-cases, it sees no difference in stress between the 2.28 and the 4.7 gears. Some people think that the chain drive case isn't strong enough to have the 4.7 gearset in front of it. In low range, you are essentially applying 4.7 times the force to the input of the stock t-case. I can understand why many people think that would cause the case to blow up under heavy load. But from seeing a few different people run the 4.7's in front of the chain case, I decided to go for it!

This is a video of my coworkers old Taco. 1:28-2:04 in the video is 1st gear idling with both cases in low. 4.7 in the crawl box, stock chain case. 5.29's on 39.5 tires.

That truck also saw more abuse than mine ever will (hopefully ) and he never had any issues with the stock chain case.

Since you have an auto, i would recommend just sticking with the standard 2.28 in the crawl box. After talking to Scotty at Addicted, he said that there is pretty much no way to stop the truck with an auto in drive and 4.7's in the crawl box. The gearing will just overpower the brakes even at idle.

Feel free to ask any questions about any of the setups

I'm down.

Its only money right? :D

This is sick. Definitely adding this to the never ending list :D

Didn't realize you had open diffs? Wow, just assumed you were locked I guess.

Wheels look killer on your rig.

Keep up the awesome work!

you will like the duals when you get it all locked up. My truck is super slow in double low, but it works real good when you need it.

Lockers are in the future but there is some sense of pride when i make it over an obstacle and then watch someone struggle and end up locking to get over it.

Its pretty crazy! I really need to wheel it though. I'm idling up every little rock i see until i get my wheeling fix.

That's what I've been telling myself during the whole build...
"do I really want to spend my entire commission check on a bunch of steel?"

...

"eh, I'll get another check in a month..."

Seriously. I need to stop though. I'm just feeding my addiction.

I got the interior back together for the most part. Its a little ghetto right now but i hoping to change that in the future. Might be helping a company test a triple stick setup for Taco's and 3rd gens.

Yes i'm aware i need a new shift knob

That's sick. With the S/C, I think this would be a bad ass dual purpose (highway/crawling) setup, and I agree that it's a better solution than changing out differential gearing. Do... freakin... want.

Congrats man, nice upgrade. @ the count.

Lets count the transfer cases in this picture. One. Two. Two! Two transfer cases!

Ah ah ah ah!

That pretty much covers the install. But no crawlbox install would be complete with out a video of the truck driving with no one behind the wheel right? :D

So there you have it. I give you the worlds only (probably) IFS, Dual case, Open diffs 3rd gen 4Runner.

Really liking this build. Just a few questions and comments about the rig.
How come you never regeared the axles? Your putting a ton of stress on your components, or are you just waiting to lock it up at the same time?
Is the triple stick you might try out also going to work for those of us with push button 4wd?
Here is a thread about our runners and dual cases people usually use radesigns, Dr. Smash, or Dave's triple sticks if you have j shift transfer cases. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-tacoma/865544-need-some-center-console-pics-duals.html

Thats exactly what i was going for! Still be able to cruise on the highway but also be able to crawl like a mofo. :D

I never really felt the need to regear. With the SC, i still have plenty of power and it cruises nice on the highway and up hills. I don't think it is adding any additional stress especially now that i have dual cases. The only thing that saw more abuse was my clutch but that isn't an issue anymore.

Mine is just the J shift case so i don't have to worry about the push button shifter. RADesigns is the one i'm looking at.

Install looks good!

A couple questions...

First, do you plan on adding another cross member or extending the factory crossmember for a little more support? It looks like the added length of the adapters and extra t-case might, along with the extra torque of the crawl box, add a lot more stress to the stock mount.

Second, did shortening the rear driveshaft add any vibration to the drivetrain at highway speeds? Did you adjust your rear pinion angle to compensate?

Third, could you take a measurement of the left side of the rear of the t-case and the crossmember / fuel tank? I have the multi mode transfer case and it has has more crap on it, I'm just wondering if it would fit or if it would hit the gas tank. Thanks!
