I agree with you on the unlit controls, but the 4Runner does have speed sensitive volume adjustment- or at least my '07 Sport non-JBL does. You can adjust its sensitivity in the stereo menu where you adjust treble and bass- Toyota calls it ASL.
 
Learn to live with it and soon it'll become second nature. I don't even have to look when locating the switches now.

And yes, ASL controls the sensitivity of how loud you want your music to drown out the road noise. There are 3 settings (low,med, & high).
 
I don't think I've ever used the button to unlock the door. Mine is set to unlock when I put the truck in park and lock when I hit about 12 mph.
 
Unlit controls are common in any Toyota. You get used to them after awhile. I can unlock my doors and open windows with my eyes closed. :D

Sorry, I was a bit ignorant on my answer lol. I'm not even sure if pre 06 4R's came with "speed sensitive volume control" on their stereos.

Yep, i have never had to unlock my doors for myself when stepping out. I just pull on the handle and it always seems to be unlocked :D

If you are still not satisfied, you can look in the manual and it tells you how to program the doors to unlock when you put it in park, etc.

My ASL doesn't work at all, at least I've never noticed it. Mine also only has on/off. It's always on, and I constantly have to adjust it depending on the ambient noise while driving. It's my understanding that it's controlled by the speed of the vehicle. Just doesn't work for me, and the 4runner despite all it's other attributes is a noisy ride (road noise that is) really. It might work better if the road noise wasn't as dominant at speed, but I don't think I'll ever find out. I've been thinking of sound proofing it, but haven't looked into the cost yet.
 
mine is an 05 - no ASL on the JBL...

I dont get to drive the 4 runner enough (wife) but I have noticed that it is not quite second nature yet to get them to unlock. It is set to pull the handle unlock and lock when it is put in drive. Just kind of an annoyance to locate the unlit buttons compared to my car and truck.


...but if that is the only complaints I have, really pretty minor...

There's gotta be selectable ranges if you got ASL.... so we can rule out that pre-06's are not equipped with ASL. Do you have an 07 or 08? I have to agree that ASL is pretty annoying while on High, because I want my music to be loud even while not in motion. ASL Low takes care of this problem and cancels out the road noise pretty well.
 
I got a perfect solution. Stop being lazy and reach down and adjust the volume. Its that simple!

Hard to not be lazy this day n age. The technology is so vast that you don't need to lift your fingers anymore. Since you have a 98, you'll still be required to do some minor knob turnage.

Just out of curiosity, do you still rent VHS? :D

I suppose I could set my headlights back to manual and stop using cruise control too! :p I hear ya...minor issues, but for a $40K vehicle one would think they would have these comforts, espically the Limited...

Noisy? one of the things I really like about our 4Runner is how quiet it is. Even on low, the ASL is almost overkill.

I would also add one more complaint, not enough powerpoints in the front!
 
ASL on nav headunits are either on or off, there isn't any sensitivity adjustments. I leave mine on and I never really need to fiddle with the volume (when listening to the radio) other than the fact the damn iPod doesn't normalize the volume.
