ASL on nav headunits are either on or off, there isn't any sensitivity adjustments. I leave mine on and I never really need to fiddle with the volume (when listening to the radio) other than the fact the damn iPod doesn't normalize the volume.

Did you check the settings in the iPod menu and turn on "volume check"? Even though the iPod is connected through the dock cable, the volume check feature should work. Before I had problem with the iPod because it sounded to distorted when connected through the dock cable. I found out the "EQ" settings on the iPod were enabled which made it sound horrible in the 4Runner. I turned the EQ off and sounds good now. So, give the "volume check" setting a try, it should make sure all the songs played are the same volume "level"

I don't have the NAV, but do have the JBL 10 speaker, 6 disc changer system. I do like having the controls on the steering wheel, very convenient. I've never noticed ASL to work on my system. I still leave it on though.

Thanks ptung07. I'll need to check for that option on my iPod (4th gen). I have it connected using the headphone port, I haven't gotten around to getting the audio cable for the dataport. I don't use the EQ settings on mine and have the volume at about 75%. I think iTunes has a normalize setting, but I don't want to alter the MP3 files themselves though.
