Tonight I got the best feeling I have ever felt. Honestly I dont think having a child could be any better than this.

Where Im from, all the boys like to have jacked up pick-ups (Z71's, F150's, Rams) and ride wet dirt roads and go through holes. Thats all they like to do. Well tonight I talked them into letting me go with them. There were three F150's a lifted ram, and my 4runner. I had already walked through the same thing they struggled with, and they were a little embarrassed. But the lifted ram tried a hole no one else wanted to try. Needless to say he got stuck. Bad.

The F150's couldn't get him out. In fact, they were bogging down just trying. Well I finally talked them into letting me do it. Well I had a fellow 4runner driver riding with me so we both thought I could do it. So I hooked up to him, put it in 4lo, and pulled his lifted-ass out without even spinning the tires. The guys out there now have a new respect for Toyota's.

I thought you guys might get a kick out of this, and I'm so proud I had to tell.:biggrin2:

Ill quote what the guys said to me when I got out of the truck.

F150 Driver: "Oh...my...God."

Ram passenger: "Got-damn."

Ram passenger: "I have a new respect for Toyota's."

Ram Driver: "I'm going to get one."
 
Haha I just wish it would have been day time so I could have video taped it.

Honestly, these guys dont want to go down the trails we know. Theyd rather go down some sloppy muddy dirt roads.

Dont get me wrong though, riding these roads is nothing easy.
 
most of the guys around me are like that too (not many dodges but the fords and chevys). It seems like all those type guys DO have respect for the older Toyota trucks, but not any of the newer stuff. I have seen quite a few modded FJs and Taco's around me though, which makes me glad b/c I'm still one of maybe 3 4Runners with anything done to them. But yeah, thats a great story that you pulled out a nice big domestic.....

I'll pick a 3rd gen over a 4th going off-road any day of the week! :biggrin2:

That goes for Tacoma's, too. Hate how Toyota has gone all bloated with the newer gens. Hope they go back to a true "compact pick up" with the next Tacoma's and 4Runners... /end rant.

Except I was referring to towing power, since his story was about dragging out one of his friends trucks. The max towing capacity of a 1998 4runner is 5,000 lbs, with some only able to go 3,500. 4th gens START at 5,000 lbs on their most basic models, and go up to 7,300 lbs.

No, I agree that 4th gens have more power, which equals more towing capacity. But the story has almost zero relevance to the difference of towing capacity. As he mentioned, F150's couldn't get his friend out.

Seemed as though your post was almost a provoke to start a bash session, but whatever. I was merely defending the 3rd gens. :cool: BTW, I would never tow 5,000 lbs in ANY 4Runner, much less 7300 lbs. If you've ever towed heavy loads, you know what I'm talking about. :awais:

It was by no means an attempt to "bash" you. But the entire point of his story was that he amazed his friends because his 4runner towed the guy out, when all others failed. So yes it had complete relevance to the story.

Although he was "offroading" that was not the main focus of it. It was that his 4runner maintained better traction and succeeded in pulling out his friend when the others failed. So bringing up the fact that a 4th gen would have done even better, makes perfect sense.

It was not to spark an argument about which generation is a better offroader, because that topic has been beat to death, and you can do a search if you are interested in that information.

And no, I would never tow 7,300 lbs either, but towing out a truck with a 7,300 limit is a lot easier than towing a truck with a 3,500 limit.

So an F150 with a 9,000lb towing capacity couldn't pull the guy out. And a 5,000lb max tow 4Runner pulled him out. Therefore, a 7,300lb max tow V8 4Runner should be able to pull him out with more ease? :confused: If you've ever towed anyone out, you'd realize that it driver skill more than anything else, especially in mud. Granted, in some cases it's shear power, but in this case, it obviously wasn't.

What makes the 4th Gen maintain better traction than the 3rd, I wonder? Since you brought up towing capacity, I'm guessing it's the weight of the V8 vs. V6? :confused: It definitely isn't the power.

Again, in this scenerio, your logic doesn't prove to be true.
 
An F150 with a 9,000 lb towing load means nothing when it's a ford. The frame would probably separate from the body if they pulled too hard. The only reason 4th gens would have better traction is because they have a wider stance, which plays into the offroading opinions of 3rd gens being better because they are skinnier. But 4th gens are significantly heavier than 3rd gens, so it would have a bit of an advantage. Similar to how a pickup is at a disadvantage in traction on snow unless they weigh down the back.

I don't think of it that way. I could care less about the 3rd Gen/4th Gen pissing contest. I had my reasons for buying a 3rd Gen over a 4th Gen, just like you had your reasons for buying a 4th Gen, and everyone else had their reasons for buying one Gen over another.

I think you are always in here because you secretly want a 3rd Gen though.:p :D

I actually almost bought one but I wanted a new vehicle not a used one.
 
I love sparking up arguments! But honestly, I could care less peoples opinions whether 4th Gen's are better than 3rd Gen's. It doesnt make a difference to me. I know I can hold my own, so it doesnt make two squirts of duck-crap which is better.

Let's do ourselves all a favor, and bash on Hummer's and Jeep's, instead.:chair:
 
I think you would find more threads bashing jeeps on this forum than on any other topic. Damn barbie carts. :lmao:
 
True. But I would take a Barbie Cart over a POS Undercover-Tahoe--Hummers (Go anywhere as long as the road is paved).
