So, I love my new Runner. But I'm going to need some more space.
I'll have our two golden retrievers in the cargo area during road trips, so that's pretty much OUT as an option for storing luggage. With a wife that doesn't pack lightly and a baby coming in two months (our first)...I think I need some more room.
I've been working with a local aluminum welder who has helped me out in the past-- this guy is seriously talented in designing cool stuff that works.
I've given him the following specs to help me design the ultimate hitch haul for road trippin' it / hunting season / etc:
1. Aluminum (light weight)
2. It needs to be able to fold UP. (to get it out of the way when you've unloaded it at your destination on a road trip).
3. Swing away- this is a big one. I want it to be hinged and swing away so that you can still open your tailgate if you have it stacked high with stuff. I want it to be able to swing away fully loaded (400+ lbs), so it needs to be stout.
4. Slightly oversized dimensions: 24.5" by 60.5"-- most hitch hauls I've seen are 60"X20" or thereabouts. I'm looking for a little bit larger size so I can fit a 24"X60" watertight utility chest on the hitch haul, like when I'm going on a road trip and need to keep luggage dry.
5. Slightly raised- this means it will come out of the hitch receiver and be elevated a couple of inches. This is pretty important when exiting steep parking lots / on trails / etc to prevent "tail dragging".
I've attached a link for a box that would fit on the hitch (and yes, that would be because I not yet sure if I've figured out how to post pictures yet). If I got this box, I might would add a rail to the top of it so I could strap a cooler or other stuff on the top.
Let me know if anyone has any cool additional thoughts for the hitch haul...I'm working on finishing up the design and getting a price this week.
