theesotericone's Trails and BS Thread

II have been quietly following your taco build. Post some pics up of the new rubber. I'm a bit surprised you 'splurged' on the tires. The beginning of mods for the taco..

Taco is not getting modded. Yet. lol

The tires got mounted today. I'll get some picks up this weekend. As usual with Nitto's they took almost no weight to balance and all vibrations are now gone. Took it for a quick highway then high speed dirt run and I'm happy.

The tires ended up costing $486 total. So I almost paid as much for them as I did the truck.

Wait... So I won the guessing game????? :D :thumb:

The oscillation in the rear when there's weight back there is what the guessing game was about. The vibrations where an old issue related to to POS General Grabbers that where on my 4Runner. Those rims then got swapped to the Taco with the same tires. Switching to Nitto's solved the steering wheel vibration but not the oscillation.

I didn't have much time to look into the oscillation last weekend but I'm thinking it's a combo of really old, shitty monroe front shocks and an almost flat leaf pack. My fix for now is just keeping it under 70 MPH when loaded down. Eventually I'll get new leaf packs and new front shocks/springs.

But, like we've talked about many times on this fiorum, new tires did solve one problem pretty easily. I really dig Nitto as a company now. That's two sets I've got from them that are exactly what a tire is supposed to be. Round and balanced. lol

Well I'm done with 24 hours of traveling. Sitting in Melbourne admiring all of the rigs in Australia that come from the factory lifted, armored, and locked. This place is amazing when it comes to 4x4s. Little wonder that it's where ARB calls home.

I'll get some photos together and post some "stock" rig shots when I get home. In the meantime feel free to post the usual 'this thread is worthless without pics" responses. Lol

I'm jealous! Have a good time in Australia! Looking forward to the pictures.

Ha! That is a long plane ride my friend. I flew back a million years ago when I was in high school in Florida to Australia. That was a crazy long time for a plane full of kids to be in the air. And when we landed, it was daytime and we were off to see stuff. I felt like a zombie.

I can't wait to see some pics. I have seem some super impressive rigs and builds that are based there. You should grab a locker while you are there! LOL.

Oh, and... Where are the damn pictures?!? :deadhorse:

I've been slacking off on pic taking as normal. Just get on Gumtree.com.au and search dual locked. I wish I could just import one of the rigs here to the US.

Since I can't I've spent some time on my vacation dreaming about finishing my rig. Then I spent some time figuring out some finances.

Lockers are a done deal and I'll be ordering them soon from ECGS. I've also been toying with the idea of dual casing it. I'm mobile so tagging everyone's thread I've looked through will take forever. You guys know who you are and I'd appreciate any feedback you guys have.

I'm thinking of 4.7 in one case and stock gears in the other. I'm auto so that should be plenty. I'm still researching all the options but I'm leaning towards Marlin for the adapters and 4.7 gear. Rad designs for the shifters. Someone makes a cross member that bolts to the transfer case bolts. I'm pretty sure it's the one that EatonKyleH used but I've read a lot of build threads this week. Lol

I figure if I'm gonna drop money for lockers I might as well just get the rest done. It is only money after all. And no, I'm not SAS'ing it. Yet. Lol

I might be able to swing a rear locker this year, but we'll see. I have a few other things to sort out that might put it off. Good for you for jumping right in there. That's going deep pretty fast for sure. I can't wait to see what you end up with.

Looks like it locker time.

I talked to ECGS and got everything squared away. I decided to go with 5.29's. That means I'll be running 33's with 5.29. I figure worse case scenario I'll just be "forced" to get bigger tires. lol

Still looking into dual casing it soon. It's been a lot more research then I thought. But, if your gonna drop that much coin, better get it figured out before hand. I'm trolling all the classifieds just looking for a used crawl box and adapters just to make my life easier. lol

NICE!!

So front and rear lockers with 5.29 gears? Oh man. So what's that about $3600 or so?

Jelly. That's going to be bad ass though.

After I return my cores it will be $3201 plus whatever shipping will be. Ironically $3200 is what I paid for the truck. lol

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it but in May of last year I went back into my old trade as a carpenter. That was a pretty big pay raise and this little purchase is the first thing I've gotten for myself since. Plus me and AssBurns have a tentative plan to wheel the Dusy this summer. He's already rear locked and I didn't want to be the weak link in our adventure. lol

They'll get used and abused. I'm hoping to have them at my door within a month. Then it's off to a trail I backed out of last year. The 500 mile break-in is gonna be the longest part of the install. lol

I think he'll be the weak link if his four wheel drive still isn't working haha :noidea:

That's awesome though that you'll be locked and regeared now though.

Good for you man. You can't take it with you. That's not as bad as I thought. I punched in some numbers before looking at ECGS, but I will probably have to wait to get into our busy season to see if I can pull something off. I might just go for the rear locker though. So, this 500 mile break in, is that as in, don't run the locker for 500 miles before use? Brutal...:crybaby:

You can use the locker right away. The break-in is just 500 miles of slowish driving and stopping if you do go fast for a bit to let the diffs cool. All companies that build diffs have the break in procedure posted on the site. It's basically so you don't overheat and weaken the gears. Once you hit 500ish miles you drain the fluid and refill. By then the gears are meshed and settled. Since ECGS offers such an incredible warranty on there diffs breaking them in properly is the least I can do.

Nice! Dusy has been on my list for a while now - just never seems to work out. Looks like a good one.

Once some dates get firmer I'll let you know. It's a long drive from Bend but if your down I'm sure AssBurns will be fine with another. I always wheel alone so wheeling with others will be good change of pace. If the plan doesn't happen I am going alone though. lol

If you ever want to come down to do any Cali trails let me know. I can usually get a weekend free. Once the lockers go in I'll be way more into pushing it solo or with people.

How do you like the 4.7's in the front case compared to stock low? Do you find you have to switch back up to high more then you used to? Stock low is about perfect for me. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the whole crawl box idea.

You mentioned getting a great deal on your dual set-up. Was it built or did you build it?

I don't mind at all. There are a couple guys on TacomaWorld that I know that are planning to do Dusy Ershim the weekend of the 16th - 20th. It would be kinda cool to meet up with them for some beers and camp for a night or something. Not necessarily run the trail with em. Too large of a group would get old quick. I think they have 4 rigs so far in there group that I know of.

I love the 4.7 - could have saved some money by just keeping the stock 2.28 but while I had it apart I figured I didn't want to be wishing I was lower. I spend most of my trail time (that is not deep snow) in 2WD low. Shift to 4WD and SuperLow as needed. I don't use the SuperLow all that much, but when you need to it is the best feeling ever.

My friend and I built it up with the Trail-Gear parts.

I would definitely be interested in finding out dates. This year may not work as I already went to Moab and am heading to the PNW Trail Jamboree in July. A third trip and my wife might let me live in my 4runner.

August? How's the progress on your rig. I haven't seen your build thread in a while.
rkntoy

Thanks for the feedback on the gear sets. I might just have Yotamasters build the crawl box. Then just do the install myself. Still thinking things over.

Keep an eye out here for the Dusy dates. I hear you about the wife. If mine ever finds out how much of my overtime cash went into this rig I'll be sleeping in mine as well. lol
