theesotericone's Trails and BS Thread

August? How's the progress on your rig. I haven't seen your build thread in a while.

Yeah August 16-20th

Progress has been slow. Still breaking in the rear end but that’s almost done now. As far as the front end goes, I’m still hoping for June sometime to get it all buttoned back up with new gears and a locker. Some stuff came up so I haven’t really been able to save all that much towards projects right now. I just bought a daily driver car so that wiped out some funds too. I have the money to do it right now but I need to keep my reserves up for a while until I figure out some things. I’m hoping to start the rear 4 link in a few weeks too. I need to pick up some metal and a new exhaust & cat. It should all be taken care of in the next few months though [emoji1619]

After I return my cores it will be $3201 plus whatever shipping will be. Ironically $3200 is what I paid for the truck. lol

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it but in May of last year I went back into my old trade as a carpenter. That was a pretty big pay raise and this little purchase is the first thing I've gotten for myself since. Plus me and AssBurns have a tentative plan to wheel the Dusy this summer. He's already rear locked and I didn't want to be the weak link in our adventure. lol

They'll get used and abused. I'm hoping to have them at my door within a month. Then it's off to a trail I backed out of last year. The 500 mile break-in is gonna be the longest part of the install. lol

Awesome! Now the weak link will be those CV's up front. You're gonna have to spend more dough on RCV axles! LOL

No way am I upgrading to chromoly CV's. I would much rather have the weak link be exactly where it is. Start a poll and ask would you rather>

A) Break a CV
B) Break something in your diff

I promise you the results would be 100% for A. lol

I agree with you 100% but thats for a Toyota diff. What you're getting is a significantly stronger diff. ARB lockers?

ARB for the lockers and Nitro for the gears. For sure the ARB would break even a chromoly shaft. There's an ARB vid that they test there unit vs a Zip air locker. They use a chromoly shaft in the test. The Zip grenades. The ARB breaks the shaft. lol

I'm still keeping my stock CV's.

OK, as long as you know you'll be busting CV's left & right. That's why I have no plans for a front locker , I don't wheel that hard anyway.

I do and I do. I'm pretty sure the 33's will be fine but once I bump that to 35's or greater there will be a much higher chance of breaking them. Hence the whole crawl box with a 150:1ish ratio. When it get's hard drop into lo/lo and engage the rear. When it gets REALLY hard, engage the front.

Until then though I'll just go slow and try to keep the wheels up in the air from spinning super fast. Not always an easy thing to do but I'll do my best. For the amount of trial mileage the get's done I'm not worried about swapping in a few CV's when needed. I'd still like to not have to though. lol

I think I may be able to give a different perspective. I am on 35's with a front arb 4:88's and dual cases with a clutch. I wheel hard or at least I wheel fairly hard stuff and I can say that I break less front CV's now that I am double locked and dual cased. I believe that is because when your locked up front with dual cases you almost never have wheel spin and without wheel spin you don't have much shock load which is when axles break. Most axles break when you have a wheel spin which when it grabs traction the shock load causes a really loud pop. LOL So a front locker especially when combined with dual cases means less broken CV's.

Now to be fair the front locker can pop CV's when trying to backup a hill especially when the wheels are turned. It is the same as solid axle Runners when doing the same. Good news is that changing a CV is a lot less messy than changing a broken Birfield.

That makes sense.

Well things are progressing a lot quicker than I thought. Should have a crawl box here in a month maybe sooner.

One of the calls I made Tuesday was to Yotamasters. Eric was super helpful in answering all the questions I had. We talked about my rig and my options. Not once did he put any sales pitch in his answers. I dig that kind of customer service. He was helping someone that wasn't even a customer yet.

After more research this week I gave him another call today. My intent was to give him some business this time. After talking for a bit we decided on the best way to approach this.

So I'm having Yotamasters build my crawl box for me. I'll be going with 2.28 in the front. Once Eric found out it was an auto and that liked how my lo currently drives he suggested skipping the 4.7s. He pointed out that the torque converter would effectively lower the ratio I've been calculating Talking to other guys with 2.28 in front they all seem happy with it as well.

He happened to have a Marlin total spline input shaft so that's going in as well as a full rebuild. I'll be using Trail Gear adapters. We talked about using Marlin but they don't have any and won't sell them unless they're attached to a Tacobox.

I gave him a small deposit and he's sourcing the mini truck case now. As soon as he gets the case my box gets built. Maybe as few as two weeks but I'm figuring a month. This is happening way faster then I had planned. So I'm broke but happy to have committed

Now I have to decide to modify my stock case and use triple sticks or just leave it and just use the reduction box for 2lo instead of the transfer case. It never ends. Lol

There are 2 reasons to triple stick. the First and main reason for me was that because this my 98 is also my daily I wanted my interior to be as clean as possible and the Raddesign does just that. Second is that it gives you the ability to have double low 2wd. I don't use it that much but there are times when it is nice to have. BTW I only have a 1/2 inch body lift and was able to get the triple sticks in. The key is to assemble them before you put the trans and transfer back into the truck. You will still have to massage the opening as the front adapter puts the whole setup back by about an inch. Not a huge deal though.

Exciting that your moving forward sooner rather than later.

The torque converter will act like a 2:1 reduction. You should be fine for all but the most extreme stuff with two 2.28 cases....with an auto, the 4.7/2.28 probably would have made the 1st and likely 2nd gear in the auto useless as they'd be too low (there is such a thing....my buggy is 265:1 and I don't use double low 1st gear b/c if I bind a tire even marginally, I snap chromo D60 shafts...don't ask how I know).

Thanks man. I am too. I just found out my wife has a work trip the second week of May. That should allow me the time to work on the truck a bit. As most of us are aware, it's a fine line between working your regular job, working on the rig, and still paying enough attention to your wife to keep her smiling. lol

I appreciate the input. It's always good to have a second, third, fourth opinion when your doing stuff like this to your rig. It's even better when all those opinions are pretty much the same. That's the whole point of doing the research. At first I was sure I wanted the 4.7's. Now I'm very glad I can just stick to the 2.28's with confidence. Those 4.7's aren't cheap and asking around just saved me some coin. It'll get spent in other places but whatever. lol

I just rolled 333,333 in the Taco this morning on the way to work. I tried to get a decent shot doing 80 down the highway but that didn't work out so well so you'll just have to take my word for it. Hope my rig makes it that long.

Still haven't heard a word from Davez Offroad about there triple stick kit. I guess there busy enough not to worry about returning phone calls. I might try and source another chain drive t-case so I can build the whole unit on a bench before I install it. That would let me keep my rig on the road a bit longer.

I'm about to grab a tranny jack from Amazon. One of the few things I still don't have and never really planned on needing. For those of you that have them what unit did you get?

That is what I did. It was nice to be able to work on the duals and still go wheeling. And now I have a spare.

Did you also pick up another set of drive shafts? I'm thinking the spare idea is a good one. If anything ever goes down in the box remove it and throw in the spare stock case and shafts.

I'm so over photo hosting sites. FML.

As some of you know I've used Dropbox(fail), Google Photos(fail, WTF Google) and Imgur. Until recently Imgur was easy to use and seemed to actually work. That has changed.

When I left for Australia I wiped all data from my comp. Except for a torrent site I use and keep seeding 24/7. I figured if someone broke into my house they could help themselves to all the movies I have. What they wouldn't get was anything else from my cyber life.

No one broke in and I restored all my stuff via the cloud. Perfect right? Wrong.

When I created my Imgur account I used G+ to log in. It was fast and painless and one less password I'd have to store. Here's the kick in the nuts. I can't use it to log back into Imgur. I'm not alone. Many, many people have had issues with using G+ as a sign into third party sites. As usual Google has changed something that makes the old code useless to it's users.

I don't know if I should be more pissed at Google or at Imgur but I'm pissed. I found this all out today. I went wheeling on a pretty rad trail. I was gonna share that little adventure. After about 15 failed log-ins I started to look into the issue.

I've sent Imgur a message asking them to convert my account to a password account. That should allow me back in. Until then you guys will have to take my word that connecting Queen Canyon to Trail Canyon in the Whites was an absolute blast.

I'm sorry to hear about your imgur issues. There is usually a way to recover one's account.

Regarding your actions of wiping all drives except the cloud and then restoring from the cloud, I am curious how much total data in TB are we talking.

I work in tech and discuss backup and recovery solutions weekly. What you did seems extremely abnormal. Of course I don't have all the details but it just seems hyper paranoid. Also from a data integrity standpoint the risk is huge.

Torrenting, AWS, Google drive, DropBox, Azure. None of those sites offer a guarantee of data integrity, eg protection from corruption. There is no SLA. Also the free ones DropBox, Google Drive, perhaps you already know that they scan and log every photo and file, if it is a picture they check the hash against FBIs image database. Obviously this isn't an issue for anyone who isn't a bad person / criminal but my point is that most folks have no idea that the cloud is so closely tied into the federal law enforcement agencies or that these companies do this scanning proactively. You have binding legal no rights on what you upload. Torrents even less so.

There is a program that is published freeware anyone can use that is called TrueCrypt. v7.2a. It has never been broken and is open source. It would make more sense to me for you to just take your private contents like tax forms (not ripped movies or truck pics) and put all of those on a fully encrypted 4TB hard drive with AES or one of the other options. Use a 20 char key. It won't be cracked in 10 yes even if El presende himself gave the order.

Sorry if this seems off topic I just find it really interesting that you did this. It would have been easier to just pull your hard drives and put them in a safe deposit box. No one could get them and even LEO would need a search warrant, not just probable cause to bust down the door. And I don't mean to imply you are worried about the law, I am just mentioning it bc most people are very interested in the government riping through their stuff.
