Theft deterrents

My '86 was stolen once before, and now with Wukong's truck being stolen as well, I want to rig a kill switch, probably on my crank wire. I'm also thinking about a Lojack. I saw a couple of you mention that you use a club, anybody running a removeable steering wheel? What else is out there?

I had my 88 4RNR stolen on Christmas Eve '09. Luckily I heard it fire up, looked out n saw it driving away! Immediately called the police who just happened to have a cruiser in the area. The fkn bas**** drove right by them! After a short chase they caught him. Cops called me 20 minutes later to come get my baby. Showed up n there she was, front tires parked on the hood of a lowered civic! The sob ghost rode it! Anyway now I pull the coil wire but im thinking about a battery disconnect like on race cars.

I have my kill switch half way installed, still need to finish it. It's a power disconnect to the fuel pump. I have a tiny little single throw switch in a undisclosed location. Should work out good once I get the wiring finished.

We just keep the truck clean(ie nothing inside to take) and have the stock Toyota radio/stereo. The truck never gets a second look, nothing to steal(and not worth much either). If a thief wants the truck, there is little one can do. Kill switches are OK, but they usually cause electrical glitches down the road(more trouble then they are worth).

someone familiar with vehicle theft should be able to bypass the common stuff with ease.

My thoughts:

shield the ignition wiring to make it a real pain to get into. tape it up, wrap it, tape it up again etc. granted, if you ever need to repair or trace a wire you'll be hating life.

-a standard alarm system/Immobilizer might help with the crime-of-opportunity type thefts.

-I think a keypad would be interesting. you could wire one up to intercept the signal after the Immobilizer as secondary kill switch. besides... if its good enough for The Transporter.... :lol:

I run a club at school, I live in a nice neighborhood, dont worry about it there. Iam however going to install a kill switch on the FP later this week. Most thieves I imagine will look and see the club and move on to an easier targer. However, KidV's ride is uber tempting, and they may use drastic measures

My buddy killed the power to his ignition switch. He has a hidden start button, the key still has to be on the "on" position for the truck to start though. Nothing is thief proof but time is their enemy.

I would not do the removable steering wheel. I mean the guys in Indy and NASCAR are professionals and theirs even come off every now and then. Something about that thing coming off just makes me a little nervous.

At the end of the day if you can increase the amount of time that the average JA has to mess with it, they will move on. A simple hidden kill switch for power or a ground would accomplish this with little effort. In the event that someone wants it to load it onto a freighter for an overseas broker, there is not much other than sleeping in it with a Glock that is going to truly prevent it.

I gotta second the keep everything clean inside. My truck has nothing in it that's visible but a box in the back that's locked. Though granted if someone really want's to break in and steal my box the sure can. They are the proud winners of some tools, oil, my repair manual, a sleeping bag, and some extra cloths of mine :thumb3::thumb3::thumb3:

stickers actually. Get a Lojack sticker and slap it on your truck. If someone THINKS it has an alarm, they wont mess with it. Just saying

insurance is really your best bet. altho, NOT quite as easy to replace an older rig, or a highly modified one.


as far as a theft deterrent, i dont do anything. just lock the doors. i dont live in the greatest area, but i have no concerns with it being stolen. ive accidentally left the keys in my bike overnight a few times too...

I have extra insurance on mine, mainly due to the amount of accessories and the equipment that I carry around in it on a regular basis.

Yeah, they would just bring a flatbed and load KidV's beauty on it

I just put multiple simple kill switches and keep mine looking like a gardener's truck on the outside. Maybe leave a few empty beer cans (filled with concrete so it's legal if I get pulled over) in plain view inside. Or park her next to a Cadillac - LOL!
