Your diff looked ok when I had it. The only time you get the "chocolate milksahake" is if you're sitting in water for a period of time. Raising the breathers is really only necessary if the axles are completely submerged and you're not moving. If you're slowly driving through, it's usually ok. But it never hurts to change the fluid after any type of wheeling.

Duc is exactly right - anyone want to know why? Anyone? (crickets chirping in the distance)

You guys are both right. If you think about it, why is there a breather there in the first place? Most modern gearboxes are designed to run fairly warm. The breather is there simply to allow for thermal expansion and contraction to happen. When you are moving, everything in the diff is toastywarm and the fluid is churning away keeping everything lubricated. While there is a chance something might go through the breather it is not as likely as, as Ducmonsta stated, if you drive into the water and stop for awhile. When you do that, everything cools and the fluid cools and water gets sucked in. There are many different types of breathers on most sealed gearboxes. They even have a dessicant type breather for atmospheric changes when dealing with more complicated designs.
 
I'm going to proudly take my '1engineer said I was right about something' and call it a day without even mentioning that the truck never sat in water while not in motion :hiding: :D

Seriously, I had it explained to me as you stated which is the only reason I was not worrying too much about putting this mod off for another day. I guess I was one of the unlucky ones.

It's not the water coming in the breather,it's the water coming in the differential seals. The breather can't vent it when it's under water.

Hot diff hits deep water,vent closes ,pressure drops in diff from cooling off ,sucking water past seals since the vent is closed .The seals are designed to keep fluid in.Has nothing to do with how long it sits there.
It will happen in a flash when your cruising along and hit deep water quick.

The other scenario is deep sandy mud can plug up the vent and not let it operate correctly. It's just a little ball bearing check valve .

It literally takes about $10 and 10 minutes of your time to help insure against thousands of dollars of repairs and a headache.Now that's cheap insurance!Dozens of DUI write-ups on it.Even an engineer could probably do it! JK

You can lead a Diff to water but you can't let him drink!

Guys, based on the pic in post 116 do you think its high enough or should I extend it even more?

Looks like its right where the top of your rim is, right?

You have to ask yourself how deep are you willing to drive! (With the bear as your co-pilot, I would think you could be peer-pressured into driving into pretty deep areas)

I relocated mine up into the engine bay, probably overkill but I know I don't need to worry about it.
 
After a trip to the dealer they added the following sticker inside the door panel because of the Gobi rack

Interesting.. they must feel that there is 47Lbs more in the Gobi rack compared to the stock rack. I guess one of the Toyota lawyers saw rack in the parking lot and decided he needed to lawsuit proof the thing.

Good explanation. I was using generic gearbox breather operation and completely forgot about check valve breathers. I would think though the "stationary in water" comment could still be valid as small debris (such as a few grains of sand) could keep this ball type check from completely seating and sealing. Anyhow, if you are going to go through deep water or mud you should raise your diff breather to a level that will not ever be under water.

hi Harper7... would you happen to have the parts list handy for the rear diff breather mod? I may do that one before Ouray since it's cheap and easy :)

Hose length, rear diff adapter part number etc would be awesome. I'm planning on running mine into the engine bay. Isn't there another breather further forward that can use a little raising? was thinking I may use a distribution block and run them all into a single filter.
