Awesome work philly! You're building the perfect 4runner, IMO. I'll be interested to hear how those Black Rock wheels hold up. Ever thought about doing the door handles and grill in gloss black as well?
 
Very nice! Now, the big question: Do you have enough, um, "intestinal fortitude" to use what you built to it's limits? You can substitute a word that rhymes with "halls" in place of "intestinal fortitude" lol. I just like using it.

To its absolute limits? Simple answer is Hell NO!

But I'm more than fine with that. I like having guns that can shoot way better than me. Girlfriends that I can't keep up with. Cars that can go way faster than I can stand. And trucks that can go where I would never dare to try.

Its actually all part of the plan because I would hate to live any life where the opposite was true. Like with any tool of life, its much better to have and not need than to need and not have. Besides, only by having more capabilities can I push myself to do even more and more.

That said, I can't think of any mod that at one point I did not need or wish I had - and now that I have, use. Like you, I love function over looks but good looks never hurt.

I too believe in overdesign unless said overdesign causes issues in other areas. I also believe in the "weakest link" theory, which trumps the "overdesign" theory every time. This is proven in my world time and time again. As soon as you "overdesign" something, the "weakest link" theory will prove itself again by allowing something that has not been "overdesigned" to fail. You then "overdesign" that part until you fail another. This continues until all parts are "overdesigned" and then you break the first part you "overdesigned" thereby proving the weakest link theory yet again. After years and years of playing by these rules I have learned to slow down and ease up a little to live to ride again another day. My wreck last year (again) proved this lol. Anyway, it looks good and I am sure it's function is close to unmatched by most 4Runners on this board.
 
^ I can't find anything to disagree with here. However in this case I don't think I over or redesigning anything as much as increasing the capability of individual components. Most were done because of a failure or first hand experience when going somewhere or doing something and a more or a different capability was required. Others were done on a "what if" basis such as the winch.

That said, while nice words are nice I post here not to brag and even not to inspire others (although its also nice when it happens) but to put it out to the more experienced members here to tell me what they REALLY think and for you guys to offer real suggestions. I will honestly say, as I mentioned in post # 1, this truck was built by ALL of you in some way or another. Other than maybe a Glock in the tissue holder or a second rear camera I think somebody else here already did the same in some form.

Many time I simply copied exactly what others have done. Suspension = Ari., TE Convert = Gary, etc. Hell, on my recent rubbing issue I sent the link of Harper's post to my alignment guy and said "do this".

I'll also say that many build thier trucks for running off road parks such as Rausch Creek. Which of course is great. But to me places such as RC are more testing grounds instead of a destination. I drive the hardest trails I can to push components so when I do go out for days in the middle of nowhere I have the added confidence and expereince to get in and get out.
 
Great thoughs guys. I've always struggled with this. In particular with ARB lockers. I keep asking myself if I'd really use them and, more Importantly, how often would I need to use them to keep them functioning properly.

The question can only be answered if you ever tried to go someplace and A-Trac just did not cut it. Once it happens the questions sort of answer themselves. While I admit that Front Lockers may be overkill they certainly make life way easier.

Here are some vids that Jessie took where in one of them I sure was glad to have the rears locked and sure wished the fronts were as well.

To answer a few PM questions -

Yes, I have picked some mods I would do differently. The main one are the cheapo lights on the Gobi which do nothing more than the High Beams. I already have a set of 6" Rigids to replace them.

There were a few questions on tires and wheels. This is the one change I resisted the longest because I really did want to stay with Stock sized 265/70/17 but I also came to realize that many times the extra inch of clearance was the difference between clearing objects or scraping along them. The reason for the new wheels came from a few guys here such as Qjake. Billy pointed out that while 285/70/17 were within spec for the 7.5" wide TE OEM wheels they were at the bottom of the spec which may cause issues when airing down. I also heard from a few that run the TE OEM wheels hard without any issue but I decided to err on the side of caution. I freely admit to being a wimp here. That said, for now I'm keeping the older tires / wheels in case I change my mind - which is really pissing off a friend who has had dibbs on the tires for a while now.

Hmm...straight or bumb-out, I'm not sure which to get. Looking at both of yours the bumb out seems to be out pretty far but on the other hand my wheel/tire combo puts the tire farther outside of the wheel well.

What do you guys think??

I probably don't count since I only offroad on "sissy hills" :hiding: but-

I would go with the bumpouts since they are also functional to help you get stuff up on the roof easier.:boink:
