Hi everyone. I am new to T4R.org but have been on tacomaworld.com for a good while. I recently sold my Tacoma and bought a 4Runner so I am changing my home Forum too.

Here is a picture of my sold Tacoma. Bilstein 5100's at .85", FJ wheels with 265/70/17 hankook dynapro MT, CB, plastidipped grill, reverse lights, and a few other random mods.

My new truck is a 1999 4Runner 5 speed, 4WD, E-Locker with ~173,000mi. I was trying to find one with lower miles but, DAMN, these things are hard to find.

Since I got it I have done a few things:
  • New shocks all around
  • OEM LBJs and outter tie rod ends
  • New sway bar bushings
  • New Steering Rack Bushings
  • New Fuel Filter
  • Adjusted throttle cable. WOW that made a big difference
  • Sythetic gear oil in diffs, Transmission was done by previous owner recently
  • Plastidipped the chrome part of the "fender flare"
  • Scion 1809 headunit swap with Ipod cable
  • cobra 75 CB with outdoor logic antenna mount

Things I have the parts for but have not done yet:
  • 2012 Trail Edition 4runner wheeels. They need to be repainted and I am thinking about going with a gunmetal color
  • Timing Belt kit, all OEM or Japanese stuff

Are there any other maintenance issues I need to address that I have not done yet? I think I should be up to par now, but Y'all know the ins and outs of these trucks. Thanks!

EDIT nvm forget the radiator, you have a manual.

I guess that's it then. The truck is back to being a great one.
 
Here is the Scion 1809 head unit with ipod adapter. I also upgraded all the door speakers and have an 8" JL sub. With this head unit it eliminated the need to run an amp on the highs like I had to do in my Tacoma. the Scion head unit puts out enough power on its own.
I know I need to fix my clock. That thing is making me mad. I had it working for a while but it has stopped again. I'll try again one day.

4Runner looks good, I like what you have done so far and what you have planned!

What made you decide to sell the Taco?
 
Dig your Taco. Miss mine here and there, but it's becoming fewer and further between the more I drive my Runner. Good to get the maintenance done right off the bat. Set a good base.

I have a few reasons for selling the Tacoma. It sometimes was pretty annoying not having a "real" back seat. I also found that anytime I was hauling anything that I could use the bed for, I tended to just use a trailer anyway. I couldn't really sleep in the Tacoma. Its nice to be able to sleep in your car on long trips (saves hotel money) or camping. It was a gas hog too. I am getting significantly better mileage with the 4runner.

Also after a bit of research I found that I would be able to sell my Tacoma for more than I bought it for even after owning it for three years. :reddance: But there is no free lunch because I slightly over-payed for the 4runner, but it had everything I wanted (5speed,4WD, E-Locker) and was in pretty good shape. And I was getting impatient because I had been looking for a few months.
 
Nice 4Runner man! I also love the Taco! I'm looking at getting one as a second vehicle, and get rid of the wife's Impala! I'm gonna get a double cab, with a 6ft box, and definitely want to lift it and put some 33's on it.

Can't wait to see what else you do with the 4Runner man! :)
 
Sweet Runner, the trail wheels are going to look awesome on there!

I am sure this is a long shot but was the scion radio a plug and play into the stock harness?

Yes, as far as wiring goes, the scion radio is plug and play. But the face of the scion radio is larger than the factory 4runner radio so I had to cut the plastic trim to enlarge the opening. If you look really closely I am sure you can tell its not a factory finish around that edge, but I tried to make it as clean as I could.
 
So I changed out the LBJs and OTREs and the steering rack bushings but I still have a bit of play in the steering wheel. Its acceptable, just mildly irritating. Does anyone know what I should do next (anything to look for?) or should I just roll with it?

I checked the inner tierod ends while I was replacing the outters and there was not any excess play in them. I didn't replace them because they were expensive and looked like kind of a pain to do.

I think your right about the alignment. That might help it from dancing around on rough pavement. I know its off a little from doing the work on the front end. However, I am waiting until I get new tires before I drop the money on an alignment.

Oh, In the previous post, I forgot to mention that I have done the swaybar bushings already.

Yeah that's your problem. Your caster is probably way off giving you the loose feeling. What tires are you going with?

Right now I am leaning towards the Good Year Dura Tracs in 265/70/17 and using the 2012 Trail Edition Wheels I have posted on the first page.
My only problem with the duratracs is that they are pricey.

I could get the same tires I had on my last truck (Hankook Dynapro MT) for much less money , but those tires started to get really loud after about 15,000 miles. But other than that it was a pretty good tire.
 
I cleaned the throttle body and MAF sensor yesterday. I also reset the EFI while I was doing the other jobs. The truck seems to be running a bit smoother now and I will have to wait a little while before I can report back on MPG changes.
 
I finally got my wheels painted. I brought them to a shop to have them sandblast the old paint off and they also sprayed an epoxy primer on the wheels. I then finished them off with the duplicolor graphite wheel paint.

I should be getting my tires tomorrow and have them mounted on the truck. I'll post an update soon
