I know around here it is all Mark Twain National Forrest and we have to go to a place called Flat Nasty. You have to do that sort of stuff on private property these days.

Businesses on the Outer Banks definately want to keep the beaches open to ORVs. They love the $$$ that we off roaders bring to town.

We grew up camping on the beach here in Hawaii...the environmentalists here have successfully fought to prohibit us from driving on the sand...now, camping at the beach means renting a beach house for the weekend (whose got the $$$ for that?)

Funny though...the "environmentalists" are still able to drive on the beach...all in the name of science and preservation of course. Seems like whenever stuff like this happens, it's the preservationists who end up having their own private playground.

Sounds like it happened there but that's hardly the norm. Fact is most preservationists are about keeping the resource intact. Trouble is, a lot of folks are mindless, uncaring idiots who go in and tear stuff up in the name of 'fun'. I deal a lot more with this stuff in dirt biking (motorcycles) and I can tell you that 'we' bring most of it on ourselves with selfish behavior.

Well, in going to OBX for Vacation toward the end of April, I had called the agency that I rented my home from and asked if I will need any passes to drive on the beach, she told me good luck on that one, I might be getting there just in time to be one of the last weeks for ORV use on the beaches, when the summer comes there are talking about not letting ORV on the beaches in that area! She sounded disappointed in it also! When I go there I hope I don't run into environmentalist, I might have to tell them a thing or too!:bash:

That stinks, we used to go down to Corolla every year for 11 years, and always made one day to drive up to Corova and fish for the day.

The beach road to Corova from Corolla would not be affected as it isn't part of the Cape Hatteras Seashore. Besides, if THAT beach was closed to vehicles, it would have to be paved over so that all of the beach houses in Corova would be accessible.

Group Wants Off-Roading, Off Limits

People in the Outer Banks are in an up in arms!

Environmental groups filed a law suit, trying to stop folks from off-roading on the beach!

The first showdown comes this Friday, when a judge considers an injunction to start cutting back on beach access for vehicles.

The Southern Environmental Law Center in Chapel Hill, NC claims they have proof off-road driving on the beach is hurting the natural wildlife, but people who live and work at the beach say stopping off-roading will hurt business and quality of life in the area.

"We are gravely concerned about the fall, because the fall is all about fishing and being on the beach and we would lose fishing tournaments and those things that mean to our economy," said Warren Judge, chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners.

Darrell Winebrenner, who comes from Maryland every year to the Outer Banks to fish said, "I would go somewhere else that allows trucks, I really would."

Outer Banks businesses and residents are circulating a petition to keep off-roading alive.

They are also holding a meeting on Wednesday night to debate this issue.

That meeting starts at 6:30pm at the First Flight High School Auditorium.

Cape Hatteras & Toyota

This will affect Cape Hatteras & Ocracoke - and if you've ever been to Ocracoke, there is very little good way to avoid walking a mile to even see the Atlantic Ocean. My understanding is that this is primarily an issue of a shorebird, the piping plover. Of the 22 documented deaths of this bird, 20 were by maintenance & park vehicles - which will, presumably, still need to access the beach. I am an environmentalist in many ways, but this is bordering in lunacy. Regulations over the years have helped keep the sea turtles happy - and the fishermen - but I guess this bird is too valuable. And this is definitely not an issue of just "off-roading" - it is an issue of a fall and winter economy sorely in need of those fishermen. Off roading is really just a means of getting to the fishing for most - and we have posters from this forum that haven't helped - doughnuts on the beach are part of the reason that the environmentalist whackos have said to ban all vehicles. So it's not an off road park, it's a beach and a beautiful & productive fishing area. Usually, there is very little damage or impact from those of us fishing out there. And for those of us who drive in the beach in different areas of the US, just wait - it will happen to you, too. The even more disturbing issue is that the goal of these groups is to ban driving, horseback riding, bicycles, and by some statements, pedestrian traffic because of these birds. And, yes, there has been much talk on the northern Outer Banks as well - and Cape Lookout has already been placed in their crosshairs if they are successful on Hatteras & Ocracoke. I'm actually a member of the NC Beach Buggy Association, and they are fighting like hell to prevent this, but it looks like an administrative judge in Raleigh holds all the power.

I guess, ultimately, some of these environmental groups think that nature is so beautiful, so in need or protection, that any human interaction will be banned. They'll protect it so extensively that we won't be able to see it. Funny, huh?

Here's the big irony - Toyota just donated 30 Million to the Audobon Society, one of the groups seeking to halt open use of the Outer Banks beaches in the winter. I'm a big Toyota proponent, but as they try to prove themselves "Green", they are eliminating one of the reasons I have bought 2 4Runners in the past 9 years. For me, that poses a huge dilemma. I can't support that donation, and if I can't use my truck on Ocracoke, I may find another vehicle. I hope not, though.

Keep your fingers crossed for the 4Runner owners in NC.

I cant believe they are activly trying this, in Delaware, the only restrictions are no walking on the Dunes when the Plovers are nesting and they setup snow fence
