I too planned to have a stand by motor but later realized, I know the existing motor and the worst it can have is a blown head gasket. It is better to get factory parts and to get it done right (with proper head job including valve guides/seals etc.,). With all these I am sure one can run the engine for another 200K miles easily.

Remanufactured motors are OK, but the parts they use are not factory toyota parts so the engine may wear out in 100 K miles.

Just an FYI you cannot effectively get new factory parts for replacing the heads with factory valves, cams etc.

The cost of a single new Toyota head, if they even sold it, would be like $3,000 per side.

That is why the choices are aftermarket, used or rebuilt.

Btw "doing it right" for head gaskets is far more than $400-600.

The Toyota Gasket kit alone is several hundred. Plus you should consider doing both sides since you will have it disassembled.

So do the JDM engines all come with the incorrect oil filter location?

Did it overheat? Are you absolutely sure it's the Head gasket? If you've covered this already disregard.

Whatever you you swap don't get a t100 3.4l . Although they look the same the water pump is different than a 3rd gen. I made the mistake and got one from a t100 and it costed me an additional 300 to convert it to a 3rd gen. Not worth it!! Also oil pan is backwards. I did all the work on one of my 3rd gen runner for about 400 + water pump and timing belt. I would take it out take it apart send the heads to get checked and resurfaced pressure tested and then go from there. If it doesn't pan out then be ready for an engine swap. Depending on the year runner you have harness changes and also exhaust manifold, along with Ac bracket and engine mounts.

I would definitely do it. Saved me about 600 buying a junk yard or JDM Engine.
