BTW, I bought my '97 a little over a year ago with 281,000 miles for a $1,000. But I've put about to 8x into it since then.

They are strong in my area too. I had people offer $3k for an 02 with 178,000 miles and a potential head/head gasket issue.

There are no fewer than (maybe more in garages) 7 3rd gen 4runners in a 2 block radius from me that sleep outdoors. Onward to immortality!

Frame corrosion is a deal breaker. Salt from beach drives or winter roads can ruin a vehicle fast. Even fresh water from stream crossings can start rust.
There are lots of posts on this site about under body/frame corrosion, just use search function to find.
Take lots of pics of the frame, body, engine, tranny, diffs, etc by getting under it with your phone. Post them here with questions and you will get lots of opinions.
Parts can be repaired/rebuilt/replaced when worn out-but rust kills 4runners.
