Thinking about selling my 4Runner.

Hey guys, i bought my 4runner about a year ago now and im starting to realize that the soul reason i bought it(snowmobile towing) i dont even have time to do it.

I love my truck but with what seems to be the promise of gas prices shooting wayyy up in the spring i dont want to waste my dough. I am out of the "cool" car phase and just want a comfortable, smooth ride with a fairly powerful v6.

I would like to stay with toyota but it seems their only option is the camry really. I do like the older gen camrys, the 2002 is one of my favorites. Has anybody here owned one? Reviews?

Any other suggestions towards a vehicle would be great. Im looking for class and comfort, rather than "wow his car is cool."

I will get about 5k for my truck and i would put down another 4-5k on another vehicle. Any ideas?

their toyota, so dependable, they come stock as a 4cyl i believe so V6s are harder to find. I have a 2001 Acura TL as my other car and love it, there stock V6, leather, heated seats, etc etc, just throwing that out there
 
Not a V6, but I love the Corolla. Low maintenance, great gas mileage and smooth to drive. I have owned 4 over the years and I am currently looking for one as my daily driver.
 
I think the Camry is the best bet for you. But I think you should keep the 4runner and get a 00-01 V6 Camry as a commuter car if possible. Those were the best looking from that generation and they're probably priced very good now. The 02-06 Camrys had to be the worst looking in my opinion but were nice cars with their smooth rides.

2G TLs are known for tranny problems though. Ask me how I know.....

WOW. lm on the same. Boat as you. I lOve my 4runner but I don't use it to the fullest. I'm the only one in my truck 99% of the time. Gas is decent to the size. But I'm looking for better mPgs and comfort. I have been poking around looking at Camry and even Avalon 2002-2006. I've put so much care in my truck but since I live in the. City a smaller efficient car makes more sense. Keep us posted on your search.

When I was on TDIClub ( owned a 02' & 10' TDI) people would always post about wanting to sell their "gas guzzler" and buy a TDI. In reality the math just doesn't make sense. Unless your buying something for what you get for your current (paid for) vehicle, the savings in fuel doesn't makeup or the expense of the new car.

I'm no mathametican but even if you got 50% better fuel economy you'd only be saving, at most, 20-30$ every fill up, or approximately $1300 a year assuming you filled up once a week.

4-5K buys an awful lot of gas.

Yeah, that's my thought, but then again I too am a tdi club member. (1tdi), MKIV jetta 285k miles rocket chip stage 3 and many other things.
 
We're thinking about selling my wife's carolla if it's something you'd be interested in. 2006, low miles (something like 52k) navy blue, back cloth, S package with the aero kit, allow wheels and sportier gauges.

I can understand your love for your 4Runner, I've owned my '97 since it was new. Which is the longest I've owned any vehicle. For me it's my Winter driver, and occasional Fourwheeling vehicle, that still runs and looks like new. For me that's enough to keep it around.

I also have a 2002 Camry with just over 27k miles on it. I originally bought it for my Mom, but she stopped driving when it was only three years old. So I take her for drives in it when she wants to go for a ride.

Anyway, it's a nice driving car, smooth, comfortable, quiet, good sounding premium factory stereo, gets great gas mileage (mid 30's on the highway) with the 2AZ-FE 4-cylinder engine, and will easily out-accelerate my V6, 5-speed, 4x4 4Runner. So while it's not a sports car, or sportbike in terms of speed, it's not a complete slug.

It's definitely not a "cool" car. But they are great if you're looking for a good, reliable, "practical" car.

You, sir, are correct. Early 3Gs still had problems, but not to the degree that the 2G TL and some Odysseys I believe.

I was on my 3rd tranny when I totaled it into a 2-day old Mercedes Benz. That tranny was slipping and started throwing torque converter codes about a week prior to the wreck. Many of the 2G TL owners, myself included, started running fluid without heavy friction modifiers (Redline Racing and others), changed out gear selection switches, etc. to see if that would help. It did initially in my case, but as I mentioned earlier in this post, my tranny was slipping and throwing codes prior to the wreck (about 15K miles after the switch to non-friction modified fluid). Honda lost alot of money on that particular design and the "fix" wasn't much of a "fix" - it simply outlasted the warranty placed on the re-manufactured units (12 months)....
 
Hmmmm. This sounds familiar. Ask MillerPKA how he likes his decision on selling his 4Runner and buying a Camary.

Pretty sure he regrets it but this really isn't a fair comparison if you have ever ** seen ** MillerPKA's old 4Runner. :wow2:
 
I would not recommend selling the 4Runner purely for gas. This is what I do not understand when gas went up a while ago. Yes, you get 50MPG with a Prius, but how long and how much gas will you need to put in to regain the costs of trading in and buying that Prius.

In your case, you are willing to sell the 4Runner for $5k and put in $4-$5k more for a V6 sedan. The MPG for that will probably average in the mid to lower 20s. The 4Runner can get around 16 city, lower 20s highway. Not trying to start anything or call you out, but think about it carefully. I have friends that ended up losing more money trying to save money by buying more fuel efficient cars. Unless you drive a Hummer or an M-1 Abrams cross-country, you won't see much in fuel savings.

To your original question, if you want comfort and V6, look into used Toyota Avalons as well. A 2000-2004 can be from $3,700-$8,800. 2002-2006 Camrys from $4,800-$11,300. Source: Consumer Guide Automotive.
 
I actually sold my 2010 TDI to buy the 4R. Sure I averaged 35mpg and got 47 on the highway but I only drive 50 to 80 miles a week. Plus I had a 400$ a month car payment. It just didn't make sense.

I may only get 16mpg but it's paid for so I'm saving saving a ton.
