thinking of an 06, or 07 v8 with AWD

I'm coming from an 2003 bmw M3 and I would like some "umph" and torque, in my 2006 or 2007 4runner.

So I'm thinking the v8 is my only real option ?

will the v8 give me significantly more torque on freeway/highwa onnramps , passing on the highway?

as well, how will I be able to tell if its is in fact AWD ?

Compare of 06 V8 4x4, 04 V8 4x4, 06 V6 4x4

The 04-05 V8's have more torque than the later ones. But yes plenty of ooomph. I guess to test the true AWD nature of it you could go mudding and have a friend see if all the wheels spin out. Yes, they do. Haha.

And I hear that URD is coming out with a supercharger kit for the VVT-i V8 (06-09) if you want M3 horsepower/torque numbers.

Welcome aboard! There's no AWD on any 4Runner. Look for one that is 4WD.

Well the v8 4x4's have fulltime 4wd, which is sort of like awd. There's not the 50/50 split like a subaru though unless you lock the center diff.

I would go for an 06 because there were no major changes between 06-09. You know it is 4WD if the truck says "4WD" on the front driver and passenger door. Good luck! For an SUV, the V8 is fast but probably nothing compared to your M3.

For the OP, on a 4WD 4Runner (in case you happen to find one that's been debadged), there is a 4H and 4L selector knob underneath the rear window switch on the center stack (left of climate controls).

Not true. The more powerful V8 is in the 2005+. There are two V8's in the 4Runner with VVT-i (2005-09) and without VVT-i (2003-04). Power "appears" to be dropped in 2006 due to the adoption of SAE J1349.

2003-04 V8 without VVT-i:
235 hp @ 4800rpm
320 lb-ft @ 3400rpm

2005 V8 with VVT-i under the old SAE testing procedures:
270 hp @ 5400rpm
330 lb-ft @ 3400rpm

2006-09 V8 with VVT-i under the new SAE J1349 standard:
260 hp @ 5400rpm
306lb-ft @ 3400rpm

For an apples to apples comparison, compare 2005 numbers to the 2003-04. It's the same engine in 2005 as it was in 2006-09, just how power was calculated and reported is done differently.
