Thinking out loud (new 5th gen vs...GX?)

The new GX looks great, and like others are saying, I’m sure it will be better than the current 4R in a lot of ways, but man, for an extra $20k-$30k (assuming overtrail edition prices), you could put a lot of top-of-the-line upgrades and add-ons on your new 4Runner, plus have plenty of budget for peace of mind additions like a full PPF.

As of now we have nothing to base any comments on long term reliability, pro / con.

The same engine has been in the LS500 since 2018. It's also been a flop in the new tundra where they are suffering from turbo and bearing failures, similar to the LS500. The same transmission has been found to perform poorly in the new LX600 and LC300. People in the LC300 have been experiencing heat exchanger failures when offroading.

It's not a new drivetrain.

in canada I am sure that the GX will start at no less than $85K. top of the line will be six figures

The reason why I did not buy the current GX (the outgoing 460) and went with the 4Runner Limited was that I could have the 4runner without a 3rd row. Sadly, the usable cargo area between the 460 and the (two row) 4Runner was significant.

The picture gallery of the GX550 clearly shows a 3rd row of seats. Do you have a need for a 3rd row of seats? If you don't, that new GX550 is going to crimp your style.

I have read that the 3rd row in the gx550 is going to be optional. That would be a huge plus. I loved that I could remove the 3rd row in our old gx470 and the compromised situation with the 3rd row in the 460 was a deal breaker. That and it felt like a cushy, isolated pillow compared to the 4r limjted.

Depends on the trim level. I think the Overland - or whatever they are calling it - only has two rows.

I haven't researched it but, based on the name, the Overland? sounds like one of the top trims. That's a lot of money to spend (within the GX pricing spread) just to get rid of the 3rd row. Too bad all of the models don't have the choice between three row and two row versions.
