Third row seat removal to access rear panel pocket, subwoofer install

I think the stock jbl with sound dampening might provide a little bit more bass but idk the only bass I really hear are from the front door speakers right now lol hopefully that changes when I hook up an amp tomorrow evening

How's it sound w/ the new amp? What amp did you go with and where did you mount it? Did you take pics?

Sounds great with the amp addition. I did not take pictures but I used velcro to mount the amp underneath the driver seat as many other individuals have done the same. I am using a JL audio 500/1 amp to power the sub.

I’ve already ran my wires and just have a sub in a box in the cargo area. Thanks to this write up, I have a new mod bug!

Took me 4 days, Friday - Monday but I took my time and was battling the heat and sun in my driveway. If I would have been able to use my garage I would have probably gotten it done in 2-3 days, but the heat was so oppressive I was only able to do a couple hours at a time, and probably lost 9-10 lbs of sweat in 4 days, but all in all it was definitely worth it!

I don't know what the cubic volume of the enclosure is, sorry

Absolutely, I spent 3 days but it was 95 degrees and incredibly hot and humid and I was working in direct sun in my driveway. I also had to rip out my stereo and run all the wires, etc. If the wiring and everything is there, removing the seat and panels shouldn't take more than a few hours. Just take your time to ensure that you don't break any clips or lose any screws.

I didn't want to spend a fortune to have a custom made box made and I wasn't sure if this JBL sub box would fix. Lo and behold, not only does it fit, sub sounds wonderful! Yes it's not going to hit like a sub in a bigger box, but I wasn't looking for massive bass. I just wanted some depth in my music.

I was lucky enough to find a 'pick and pull' that had the box and I made a low ball offer thinking they wouldn't accept it, but they did! So happy about this now!

I just threw the part number in google search and found the subwoofer by pure luck. As for the screen cover, I just got off the phone with my dealership and they told me that JBL speaker grill is only sold with the entire rear panel assembly and not on it's own. So I might need to have something fabricated to fit that area. But at the same time, my radio installer just hot glued the original door panel into the opening so the sub isn't exposed. I might just leave it like that.

Yeah, you can only get the whole panel sadly. I've been trying to find a member on here who doesn't need the JBL Speaker grill trim piece that they aren't using

Do you have the part number to this JBL enclosure?

Then I ran the rest of my wires to my amp under my passenger seat, tested everything, and replaced the rear panel and the seats.

And just like that, a subwoofer where there wasn't intended to be one on my model!

No reason it shouldnt. Any 10'-19' oem jbl enclosure should all fit between 5th gen models

The enclosure is the same, however if you don't have the third row then you don't have the pocket I'm showing here. I've seen one person do this with the larger side pocket trim piece but they had to hack apart that panel to make a hole for the subwoofer

Great write up here! I’ve got a limited with the JBL enclosure already in place, but this will help when I do the 8W3v3-4 install over Thanksgiving. I’m only going to be sending 200w RMS to it with the amp I have planned, so hopefully that won’t be too underpowered. If it is, at least the wiring is in place already to swap out for a larger amp.

Earlier in the thread I read that the internal volume of these JBL boxes are 12L which is 0.43 cubic feet. According to Crutchfield, the optimal JL sub box volume should be 0.3cf for sealed and 0.35cf ported. Did anyone adjust the box size to limit the volume for better results? Did anyone reinforce the box or have any issue with it supporting the extra force of the sub? I’ve got a 1/2” spacer ring to try and limit the modification or trimming of the fins if possible.

Nah, that is not too much power for this sub, I'm running a 250 watt amp and it's fine bridged into the sub.

As for the space, I used it as a sealed enclosure and just removed the fins in the bottom to make room for the magnet and never had any issues.

The 86150-35080 indicates that it's for vehicles produced 05/2017-08/2019

I was reading on another thread that some guy used the 86150-35080 for his 2014 4runner and it worked perfectly. Bolted in and everything.

Do you have any insight on this? Price difference between these 2 part number is several hundred dollars.
