This rear brake caliper leaking?

Hi all,

here is a picture of my rear caliper. i pumped the brakes a few times, pushed it out, then pushed it back in with a clamp. moved pretty effortlessly. however im worried about a little bit of 'liquid' material around the piston ring.

is this normal please see attached for pictures

picture 2 is the brake caliper after 2 weeks of not being used

I pumped the brakes just a little to verify operation of the caliper, and thus gives me pictures of 1 and 3.

are you pumping your brakes without the pads installed within the caliper and the caliper on the rotor?

I did it without the pads installed just 2-3 pumps to see if the caliper would extend I didn't go too far out, it returned just fine. it was not attached to the rotor lose like in the picture

Was i not supposed to do that?

it could easily over extend and youll be replacing the caliper because its impossible to put the piston back in.

Since it went back in on it's own you didn't go out to far. As for the liquid you see, good possibility they have a slight leaky seal. Noticed all the rust on the piston and caliber, probably had a little piece slide in and damage the internal seal.

I'd do a rebuild or replace the caliper. Yes the seal is leaking, and no it shouldn't be. It should be dry under all circumstances.

yes, its leaking.

replace both sides.

Thanks, I'm glad I'm skeptical, and got a second opinion. this would be a recipe for disaster in the winter. Going to do a 5th gen upgrade !

Went to change out the calipers today, a lot harder than I thought. no clearance to open the banjo bolt.

no signs of leaks though...

much much harder than I thought!
