I've been looking for a runner for a while now. I really wanted a 99+ for the upgraded interior.. but then this ad came along with a lot of upgrades and a rear locker.

think I should go for it?

here's the ad

I have for sale my 97 4runner limited. It has electronic 4x4 with factory rear diff locker. The truck has 155k original miles 3.4l auto. I just put maxxis tires (265/70/16) 31"s with a 3in leveling kit in the front. I also just replaced all 4 shocks with kyb gas adjusts, new front axles, serviced trans at 140k replaced all diff and transfer case fluid at the same time. Has new front pads and rotors, external trans cooler, electric fan conversion with automatic fan contoller, 6k hi\low hid, 1" wheel spacers all the way around, tow package, 9000lb smittybuilt winch with custom winch bracket, deck plate mod, intake silencer removal mod, rear diff locker mod, new timing belt, waterpump, drive belts, valve cover gaskets, plugs, ngk wires, all done around 140 also. Only bad things are a few small sc4atches here and there from tree branches, has leather seats but tearing up because it dried out(cant even tell tho) burns no oil at all, leaks nothing. Runs and drives amazing! Well taken care of. I dont put it in the mud either. only trail riding. Asking 7000 or trade for tacoma of equal value. Will probably keep my winch unless trade is right.

Well, the seller is optimistic at least. You would have to be blind to not be able to tell the seats have seen better days.

Anyway, 7k seems overpriced for what it is.

yeah that's one thing. but i was planning on redoing the seats in waterproof Marine leather or Vinyl(depending on price haha). and I was planning on bartering but like he says, he'll probably repo the winch If I try that

Go for it. Are you really going to throw a fit over some cupholders and headrest holders that can be added later on? If the 4Runner is in good mechanical condition then you should get it.

I agree, I've seen lesser trucks for more. Sounds like he's done a lot of maintenance on it recently which would make it a good buy in my opinion. It would be easier to give advice after seeing it in person.

I guess it just makes me leery. If he's willing to misrepresent something that obvious, it makes me wonder what possible problems he's not mentioning at all.

I would keep looking. But good luck with whatever you decide.

misrepresent what? the condition of the leather? He admits its dry-rotting..

His words:

That seems like an obvious misrepresentation to me.

Anyway, I'm done with this topic.

Good luck.

Oh I see what you mean. I'm gonna have a look at it, if the interior is bad enough that I don't wanna DD it, I'll pass it up and wait for a cleaner one.

Find out what he did to "level" it. If he put spacers in there, don't let him charge a premium for that being spacers are cheap.

Yea honestly not many upgrades to justify 7k. If it was a full suspension lift I might be worth it. From the sounds of his "mod list" he is either on this forum or a lurker... I wonder what he would think of this thread

Personally I'd wait for a 99'+ I was in the same boat, but found a great deal on a 97' so I went for it, I don't at all regret my decision, love that it was all stock, mileage, and color. But I think about what if I woulda waited longer for that 99' IJM highlander 5spd. whoo! lol
be patient and very picky, get exactly what you want. 7ks a little steep I think as well.

I'd probably wait for a '99+, which is what I did after my '97 got totalled. I prefer the look of the "fat lip" front bumper, and the center console cup holders (so glad to get rid of the cup holders in the dash). I also like having 3 power outlets up front, and one in the rear. But then again, I wasn't looking for a 5spd or a rear e-locker as well, so it was a little easier to find a '99 Limited with 4x4. Just depends on what you want.

I think we all know that cash talks and if you show up with hundred dollar bills you can get anything for less then what they are asking...
I would highly suggest a pre purchase inspection from a good shop.
Also, if all of that work was really done to the truck he should have several stacks of records for it. if it was done at a good shop and he has the paper to back it up that saves you easily a thousand dollars of preventive work right off the top

I guess it really depends on how low he will go on the price and how bad the truck is beat. what he says if " Just trails" could mean beating the piss out of it, or it could mean forrest service roads that a honda civic could drive down. Either way, sounds like this truck was a toy.

My ideal T4R would be a 99+ with locker. I want the locker and 4:30 gears, but like the upgrades the 99+ have, too. But I'd be willing to do the interior upgrades on an older T4R with locker, as well, if it was considerably cheaper. Hope that helps.
