I think with how often these misguided threads that the 2016 is the 6th gen and the lack of understanding of 4Runner history; there needs to be a good sticky on the history of the 4Runner and how the Hilux and Prado play in...
Long Story short:
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 (the platform that the 4th gen 4Runner, Tacoma, GX470, and FJ Cruiser are built on.)
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 150 (the platform that the 5th gen 4Runner, '10~15 [possibly '16+] Tacoma, '10~14 FJ Cruiser, and GX460 are built on; and to be honest the frame is dimensionally the same as the Prado 120's)

The Hilux is built on a stronger, more robust frame than the Tacoma. The Toyota "Truck" was sold as the Hilux overseas, when the 1st Gen Tacoma was built it was built on a frame designed more for comfort, ride quality, and such. The Hilux retained the Toyota Truck ladder frame and improved on it as it is sold overseas as a work truck; the Hilux and Tacomas do NOT share a frame. By the second Generation the frame became a modified Prado 120 frame that underpinned the 4Runner as well.
The Fortuner is based on the Hilux ladder frame and is actually smaller than the 4Runner; this is a "small SUV" sold mainly in Asia and some of the rest of the world. The Fortuner shares nothing with the 4Runner besides a vague boxy SUV styling that encompasses most of Toyota's SUVs.
...and yes the Prado looks like a Lexus GX because it is, Lexus just added some badges and some extra luxury and resold it in the US under the GX name plate for the most part.

It's the new Hilux 8th gen m80 chassis. We have the Prado 150 chassis in the 5th gen 4Runner ( a sight variant of the 120 4th gen...).

I saw one of the advertisements for the new Hilux recently and it is a pretty big deal that it can now haul 6 standard fruit boxes instead of 4 like the last model. Really points out how different the markets are where people actually use their trucks for work. When was the last time you saw an add on how many sheets of plywood or cords of firewood will fit in the back of a truck?

Correct in most ways, but arguably wrong too. You think a soccer mom goes into the dealer to get her limited and says that a 4.0 gasser and a 5 speed auto are on her wishlist? We 100% do not have a fleet of diesel SUVs in the states due to politics. And low gas prices (even at $4/gallon)

Not arguably wrong. Look at diesel sales compared to like vehicle sales. Also look at manual transmission sales versus automatics over the past two decades. Contrary to popular belief, car manufacturers only build and offer what the consumers want. If enough consumers demand a manual and a diesel the manufacturers would offer it. They only want to sell cars not change the world.

There are 2 kinds of consumers: driving enthusiasts (that's why foreign sporty cars come with MT) and those who just want transportation. I would think that a 4Runner is more of a drivers vehicle than just transportation.
