1 reason Toyota will not sell a diesel like this in the US. Emissions requirements.
2nd reason is that only a handful of people want that here. Some think they want it, but would hate it once they actually owned it. 170hp is still only 170hp no matter how much torque you have.
People need to give up hope on diesels here as far as new vehicles go (unless they are already close to production like the Jeep and Chev Colorado). They are simply not going to survive the emissions crunch that is really just starting and is about to get insane.

I could totally see them transmorphing that into the next 4runner. The T4r still get high ratings in magazine tests, except for its look and interior layout, which of course no one on here cares about lol. But no really they know they need to freshen it up, will it be that drastic or stylish...I doubt it. Will it have the Nissan Murano-esqe 3/4 windows...holy hell I hope not. But I could see a cross of this thing and the new Tacoma, albeit with a better drivetrain.

While the idea of diesel seems pretty cool, especially with something like the Land Cruiser 79 series, the cost of repairs and upkeep are not ideal, and the chances of any knowledge or support on Toyota diesels in this country will be little to none.
As for the appearance, I may be wrong, but I thought the Fortuner was geared towards being a "cheaper" and smaller option to the Prado, something like Toyota's equivalent to the Ford Edge, something between the midsize Prado/4runner and compact Rav 4. Though not all offered in the same areas. My guess would be it's a niche market in those areas that could not be filled with a Rav 4 or Highlander. If the 4runner "morphed" into any foreign offering, it would be the Prado.

This is a good point. Imagine the guys that think KDSS is an "Auto leveling system" trying to troubleshoot a diesel engine.

Most buyers think of it as just transportation. It's definitely not a driver's vehicle. It's a station wagon that goes off road. Very few take it off road.
The Germans are throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks. Very few want a diesel or a manual transmission in the US and there are many charts and graphs to prove it. But hey, keep your dream alive man it just won't be with a 4Runner.

^^^Exactly, most cars these days are viewed as appliances by their owners. They want reliability, cheapness and anonymity when driving. It's been said on here a million times, but this forum does not offer a representative slice of 4Runner owners.

I wanted a 4x2 LE and not a 4x4. No need for 4x4 where I live. I use mine to tow with and carry tools etc. I know I didn't buy a Prius so 18mpg is okay for my 10 mile round trip commute

My daughter and her husbands Diesel JGC just got out of the shop for warranty repair. All new injectors and fuel pump etc. $9000 bill. Diesels
are pricy and dicey. He wants to get rid of it for sure before his warranty is up.

The last thing Jeep needed, with their crappy reliability, was to dabble in diesel engines. However, European diesel engines have been doing just fine for many years.

It is a european diesel lol.....and with as many problems as we see with BMW diesels, not so much with the Benz's, but just on upkeep,options upgrade cost, fuel costs, urea costs...and everything else I have no use for a oil burner.

My friend is a huge diesel fan. He owned diesel pickups in the past. He sold his big truck and decided to get a SUV and a sedan. A 2015 GGC and some type of BMW sedan. Both are diesel and both are constantly in the shop with thousands of dollars in repair (all covered under warranty). He has finally decided he will be selling when close to end of warranty and give up on his diesel obsession.
Diesels are about to be a thing of the past for passenger vehicles (even in Europe). I'm sure of it. The emissions are just too much of a health risk and the technology required to fully scrub is too expensive and problematic.
We will see gasoline engines become more diesel like with HCCI.
