Just got back from our first big trip in the 4Runner. 2537 miles total from Indy to Ft. Lauderdale, and back for Thanksgiving. Ran smooth, good gas milage (23 mpg avg.), and doesn't look like it ever left the driveway. Felt bad for the close to 20 vehicles we saw stranded on the shoulders of the highway. I could probably hop back in and make the trip again tomorrow...just further proof that I made a great decision in buying one. Just thought I'd share...hope everyone had a good holiday.

What speeds were you running? I recently took a trip and was looking forward to low 20's and got 18-19mpg. I was running about 80 most of the time, Atlanta to Gainesville, FL. (AC was on most of the time, but I don't think that should make that much difference.) Auto or stick? I am beginning to wonder if there's something going on with my lockup.

Here is a pic from the start and one from the way home...they look pretty comfy!

We drove consistently around 75mph. No AC until we got down there...we drove at night so it was cooler. I changed oil, flushed coolant and tranny, and aired tires up a little higher than usual. Didnt have too much weight in the back. I was actually surprised that we got such good mpgs. We set the cruise and just went...I'm sure not having to slow and accelerate a bunch helped too.

Nice share. People underestimate these 3rd Gens. When most people see a 10 year old 4Runner they automatically think it's outdated and about to break down. What they don't know is how well designed and made these 4Runner's actually are!

I live in Indianapolis. You're closer to Cincy...I have a bunch of family in Louisville. We always try to travel at night to avoid traffic. We got to Atlanta around 11pm...other vehicles, but no traffic! Coming back up we passed through at 1am...deserted.

i drove 1465 mile this week up and down Cali. I didnt change the oil, current oil had 2500miles on it, had a head wind going both directions (highs and lows pressures switched on me), was in a blizard and icey conditions. Avg'd about 18mpg. towed a trailer for half of it. I wouldnt think twice about doing it again but i would change the oil.

I regularly travel (every couple weeks) almost 1000 mile round trip. I have never been hesitant to hop in the runner and go. I change the oil often and use amsoil or mobile 1 and I am never worried about breaking down. I average between 19-22mpg depending on head wind and that has been with the ac on in the middle of the day.

I bought my runner back in july I believe with 197,xxx and I now have 213,xxx with no problems at all.

take care of it and it will take care of you.
